Discover Polveraia
Accommodation in Polveraia
Polveraia combines a setting on a ridge with church history and regional cultural connections. The parish church of San Matteo points to Cotone; San Giorgio features both in an annual tradition and as the destination of a named cycling tour. The landscape, parish history, and cycling route offer different perspectives on the town.
A setting between the ridge and the plains
Polveraia lies on a ridge in the Val d’Ombrone and opens northwards onto the lower-lying plains of Pian d’Orneta, Sabatina, and Granaione. This places the ridge-top setting and the northern outlook over the three plains alongside one another as two distinct spatial references. Val d’Ombrone refers to the broader landscape; the three proper names specify the lower-lying northern side.
San Matteo and the history of Cotone
The parish church of San Matteo stands at the entrance to Polveraia. It has a 1621 holy water font made of travertine, which was brought here from the churches of Cotone. The parish’s history also leads back to Cotone: the parish of Polveraia is the successor to the old parish in Cotone, which was moved here in the 17th century. The holy water font represents the transfer of a specific object, while the parish’s history represents institutional continuity. The dates should also be distinguished: 1621 dates the font, while the relocation of the old parish is assigned to the 17th century.
San Giorgio: tradition and cycling tour
The Santuario di San Giorgio lies outside Montorgiali in the direction of Polveraia. In the area around Polveraia, the Cavalcata di San Giorgio reaches the sanctuary every year on April 23. If this date matters for your trip, check the latest event dates in advance.
The sanctuary is also the destination of the Montorgiali, San Giorgio e la Via Clodia cycling tour. The route passes through Polveraia and then follows the SP 39 and a consortium road branching off from it to the Santuario di San Giorgio. This gives two distinct travel connections: the Cavalcata is an annual tradition with a fixed date, while the cycling tour is a named route through Polveraia and onward to the sanctuary.
The Pro Loco Polveraia
The Pro Loco Polveraia is an association whose aim is to promote the tourist, cultural, environmental, social, sporting, historical, and artistic development of the municipal area of Scansano, as well as the quality of life of its residents and visitors, particularly in the hamlet of Polveraia. Its aims link municipal development with the quality of life of those who live there or visit. Its focus on Polveraia is set within a larger municipal area that the association’s goals address as a whole.
For cultural and historical interests, the focus is on the parish church of San Matteo and its connections to Cotone; for cycling interests, it is on the named tour, with Polveraia as a place along the way and San Giorgio as its destination. This makes it easy to distinguish the town’s history from the route.
