Roccalbegna combines a medieval village layout with religious and civic architecture, as well as natural attractions. In the village, a grid of right-angled streets shapes the townscape; a hike from Roccalbegna leads to the Riserva Naturale del Pescinello. You can plan your stay around different interests: architectural history and art in the village, or a route through the landscape.

A Medieval Village and Preserved Heritage

Roccalbegna’s distinctive grid of right-angled streets was laid out by Sienese architects at the end of the 13th century. It gives the medieval village a striking urban form. Its preserved religious and civic heritage includes the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, the Chiesa del Crocefisso, and the Chiesa della Madonna del Soccorso. The townscape also features the Cassero and its garden, Palazzo della Lana, and Palazzo Bichi Ruspoli. The fully preserved town walls and the Porta di Maremma are also part of this heritage. Together, these buildings reveal different aspects of the town’s history: churches, palaces, a fortified boundary, and the Cassero with its garden.

A Museum, Frescoes, and an Altarpiece

The Oratorio del Crocifisso now houses a museum with an art gallery featuring works by Francesco Nasini and Sebastiano Folli in particular. Another stop on the history of art is the Madonna Chapel outside the Porta di Maremma; its frescoes date from the 15th century. Roccalbegna is also home to an altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child, painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in 1340. These examples represent different forms of religious art: works in an art gallery, frescoes in a chapel, and a dated altarpiece. The cultural heritage can therefore be seen not only in the buildings, but also in the artworks housed in them or located in the town.

Nature Reserves and Trails

Bosco Rocconi has been part of the Riserva Naturale Provinciale di Rocconi provincial nature reserve since 1998. It is also part of the ZSC/ZPS “Monte Labbro e Alta valle dell’Albegna” Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area. The Riserva Naturale del Pescinello offers a different way to explore the landscape: this 149-hectare protected area encompasses rugged terrain, with a gorge carved by the Albegna River, oak forests, pastures, and scrubland. The two names refer to different protected areas; the hike from Roccalbegna reaches Pescinello.

The hike to Pescinello starts at Piazza IV Novembre and follows a steep ascent marked with white and red trail markers. The described return hike from Podere Pescinello to Roccalbegna takes 45 minutes. This time applies to the return leg, not to the total duration of the hike. The trail information helps you distinguish the ascent and the time required for this section when planning.

Another destination is the Pietra, a tower overlooking Roccalbegna. Access is via a steep paved road followed by narrow stone steps. Unlike the marked hike to Pescinello, these directions describe a route consisting of a road section and steps. Take the terrain into account when planning, and check the condition of the access route before your visit, as conditions may change.
