Talamone sits on a rocky headland and offers views of the bay of the same name and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Coastal scenery, historic buildings and trails in the Parco della Maremma give the destination a variety of attractions. When planning your visit, it is worth considering how the beaches, routes and activities differ from one another.

Coast and Beaches

Cannone Beach is small and rocky, with clear water. The cliffs make access somewhat difficult. Fertilia, by contrast, is a long, freely accessible beach. Kitesurfing and windsurfing are possible there; conditions depend on the weather and season. The two beaches therefore have different features: Cannone has a rocky coastline and more difficult access, while Fertilia is notable for its length and water sports opportunities.

Historic Buildings in Talamone

Porta Garibaldi dates back to the 13th century and was built by the Aldobrandeschi family. Today, it is the village’s only surviving original entrance. The Rocca Aldobrandesca, a medieval fortress built for defense and observation, also dates back to the 13th century. It played an important role during Giuseppe Garibaldi’s Expedition of the Thousand. The gate and fortress thus reflect different functions in the history of the town.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta was built in 1374 on the site of an older building. It houses 15th-century frescoes depicting the Madonna and Child. Outside Talamone is the Church of Madonna delle Grazie, built in the 17th century. It served as a place of refuge and prayer for travelers. The coastal towers are also part of the area’s history: Torre di Capo d’Uomo dates back to the 16th century, while Torre delle Cannelle was built by the Medici.

Important for planning your visit: the Acquario e centro visite Talamone and the Cisterne Romane are closed. Check their status again before your visit.

Trails and Views

The T2 Cannelle hiking trail passes through Mediterranean scrub to a small, secluded cove. The cove at the end of the trail can only be reached as part of a guided visit, which must be booked in advance. From the T2, the views extend across the Tyrrhenian Sea and toward Argentario, Giglio and Elba. On clear days, Montecristo and distant Corsica are also visible. The trail combines scrubland and coastal scenery with restricted access to the cove.

A longer route option is the Traversata del Parco della Maremma. It runs from Talamone to Alberese; alternatively, its southern section runs from Collecchio to Talamone. The full Traversata is about 20 kilometers long, with continuous ascents and descents at elevations between 0 and 400 meters. Advance reservations and a guide service are mandatory for the Traversata. Dates and arrangements vary, so check the latest schedule before your trip.

Water Sports and Lessons

Talamone Sports HUB offers kitesurfing, windsurfing and SUP lessons for beginners and advanced participants. It also rents equipment for windsurfing, kitesurfing, SUP and wingfoiling. Lessons and rentals are available seasonally. If one of these activities is important to your stay, check availability before your trip. These lessons differ from the water sports at Fertilia Beach: they are offered by the Sports HUB, while the information about Fertilia concerns the activities possible there and the changing weather and seasonal conditions.
