Porto Ercole: Fortresses, Old Town and Caravaggio
Accommodation in Porto Ercole
Porto Ercole can be explored through several distinct interests: the old seafaring town and its harbour, its fortress architecture, and routes connected with Caravaggio. If you are looking for a hotel in Porto Ercole, these themes can help you decide what kind of trip you want. Buildings, routes and viewpoints each offer a different focus.
Old Town, Church and Harbour
The Porta Pisana, with its clock tower, forms the entrance to the old town centre. The Chiesa di Sant’Erasmo stands at the highest point of the old seafaring village. On Piazza Santa Barbara is the Governor’s Palace; from there, the view extends far across the harbour. At the marina, the picturesque waterfront promenade is lined with fishermen’s houses. These features bring out different sides of the town: the entrance to the old centre, the church’s elevated location and the harbour-facing waterfront.
Fortress Architecture and Building History
The Rocca brings together several building phases. It was built in the 15th century to a design by Vecchietta; some buildings date from the 13th century. A wall that descends towards the sea connects the Rocca to the Bastion of Santa Barbara by an underground passage. The building history and the connection between the wall, passage and bastion are among the complex’s distinctive features.
Forte Filippo is a privately owned fortification built in 1558 to a design by Giovanni Camerini. Its elongated rectangular shape, distinctive corner bastions and deep moat describe the structure in concrete terms. Forte Stella is located near Porto Ercole, in the municipality of Monte Argentario. The Spanish built it around the second half of the 16th century. The fortresses can therefore be distinguished not only by their shape, but also by their construction period and location.
Routes with Different Themes
The Anello dei 4 forti circular route leads from Porto Ercole to the Spanish fortresses and passes through Cala Galera, the Rocca and Le Viste. The Percorso del Caravaggio is a hiking trail dedicated to Caravaggio’s final days in Porto Ercole. The town is also associated with the painter’s death in 1610. The routes therefore have clearly distinct themes: one focuses on fortresses and named places, the other on Caravaggio’s life story.
A cycling route is also named: the Giro del Monte e le Rocche Spagnole dell’Argentario reaches Cala Galera and the first houses of Porto Ercole. When planning your trip, you can choose between a circular route to the fortresses, a Caravaggio hiking trail and a cycling route with its own itinerary.
Coastal Views and Botanical Diversity
From Forte Stella, the view extends along the coast from southern Argentario to the headland of Capo Linaro near Civitavecchia. The beach also offers a view of the Tombolo della Feniglia and Forte Filippo. The two descriptions of the views mention different landmarks and show how far the view extends along the coast or towards named landscape features.
Another aspect is the Orto Botanico Corsini: it covers more than seven hectares and includes more than 1,300 plants from 150 different species. Alongside the fortress architecture and Caravaggio routes, this botanical focus offers another way to plan your trip.
