Giglio Porto: Harbor Town, History and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Giglio Porto
Harbor and Getting to Giglio Porto
If you are looking for a hotel in Giglio Porto, you can get a feel for the town by focusing on specific interests: the harbor and getting there, historic buildings, walking routes or activities on the water. Giglio Porto is the island’s only harbor and the landing point for ferries from Porto Stefano. The crossing from Porto Santo Stefano to Giglio Porto takes about an hour. Ferries run daily throughout the year, with more frequent service in summer. Check the current schedule when planning your arrival.
Historic Landmarks in the Town
Two historic buildings represent different periods. The Torre del Saraceno was built in 1596 at the behest of Ferdinando I of Tuscany. The Villa Marittima dei Domizi Enobarbi dates from a much earlier period: it was built in the second half of the 1st century BC. The Roman villa and the tower are separated by a considerable span of time; both offer insight into the history of Giglio Porto.
A footpath leads from the Torre del Saraceno to the small beach cove of Caletta del Saraceno. There, walls of a cetaria used to raise moray eels can be seen along the waterline. Parts of the Roman villa of the Domizi Enobarbi are preserved and visible in the area of the Caletta. How clearly the walls can be seen along the waterline may vary with the water level. A short detour to the cove thus connects two different traces of ancient use.
Walking Between Giglio Porto and Castello
The ancient mule track from Giglio Porto to Giglio Castello is paved with granite stones and makes for an easy walk. The path offers a view of Arenella Beach; visibility depends on conditions. Trail conditions may change, so check the current situation before setting out. Another route runs from Giglio Castello via the beach at Cannelle to Giglio Porto. The two route descriptions emphasize different things: the mule track is distinguished by its historic paving, while the other route includes a stretch of beach.
Cala dello Smeraldo is also within walking distance: the cove is about a ten-minute walk from the area near Giglio Porto. This is an approximate guide. The Info-Park point at Via Provinciale 9 provides official maps of the walking routes on Giglio and Giannutri. Check seasonal visitor-service details in advance.
Diving, Boat Trips and Traditions
Dive centers in Giglio Porto offer guided dives and diving courses for all levels. The Barcaioli take visitors by boat to beaches and coves that are otherwise inaccessible; they also offer trips around the island with stops for swimming. This gives you a choice of different activities: guided dives and courses, or boat trips to coves or around the island. Offerings and operating conditions may change. Check current options before your trip.
Traditions in Giglio Porto include the Palio Marinaro dell’Isola del Giglio, a rowing regatta between the districts of Chiesa, Moletto and Saraceno. The Festa di San Lorenzo includes a procession at sea in honor of the Madonna Stella Maris. The exact program may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the latest dates and program information in advance.
