Alberese lies in the heart of Parco della Maremma. Nature trails, wildlife watching and historic sites give a trip here a variety of possible focuses. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Alberese, you can start by considering whether you would mainly like to hike, cycle, observe the landscape or learn about the area's history.

Hiking trails and cycling routes

The short A1b San Rabano hiking trail starts in Alberese and passes through a large olive grove to the ruins of San Rabano Abbey. Two viewpoints face north and south respectively; from them, you can see along the entire coastline in this part of Tuscany. The route thus combines a historic destination with expansive views of the coastal landscape.

The short A5 Itinerario forestale walking trail offers a different focus: along it, you can discover various forms of Mediterranean woodland. The trail also passes through an abandoned old olive grove, where fallow deer can be spotted. Those interested in woodland scenery will find a different kind of nature experience here than on the A1b trail to the abbey ruins and viewpoints.

The 13.1-kilometre A11 Strada degli Ulivi runs from Alberese to Collelungo and is rated as easy. It leads from Alberese to Collelungo Beach, following a paved road closed to traffic and crossing the Uccellina area. Check the current access conditions before setting out. Route A7 follows the cycle path to Marina di Alberese and then continues to the mouth of the Ombrone River.

Landscape and wildlife watching

Free-roaming Maremma horses and cattle graze on Alberese's wide meadows, watched over by butteri (traditional Tuscan cowboys). At the foot of the Uccellina Mountains lies Boschetto del Lasco, a tree-covered pasture. Wildlife seeks shelter there among large holm oaks, cork oaks and downy oaks. The open pastureland and wooded surroundings reveal two different sides of the area.

The riding route to Boschetto del Lasco also passes through the area's flat pastures and, according to the route description, is suitable for inexperienced riders. Another way to experience the landscape is to take a horse-drawn carriage ride in Parco della Maremma, accompanied by a nature guide. Both rides start in Spergolaia, near Alberese. Check availability and current booking conditions before making plans.

Near the mouth of the Ombrone, herons, kingfishers and pond turtles can be spotted in quiet waters. Sightings are not guaranteed. Nevertheless, these waters offer a distinct nature-watching perspective alongside the woodland trails, pastures and coastal destinations.

Village setting and history

The modern settlement of Alberese consists of a few houses between the 15th-century Villa Granducale and the Church of Santa Maria. The church was built in 1956 in the Neo-Romanesque style. This look at the village complements the longer history of San Rabano: the abbey was an 11th-century religious centre, built by Benedictines of the Cassinese Order in the Lombard-Romanesque style.

Historical, cultural and nature-based activities are available in Alberese throughout the year; check individual programmes before your trip. In summer, entertainment events are held at the Granaio Lorenese in Alberese. If specific dates are important for your trip, check the current programme in advance.

Practical information for your visit

An admission ticket is required for the trails in Parco della Maremma. You can buy one at the Alberese visitor centre or online. As ticketing procedures may change, check the current purchase options before your visit. A bus connects Alberese with Marina di Alberese Beach and stops at the visitor centre of Parco Regionale della Maremma. The bus timetable may vary by season, so check the current schedule before travelling.
