Castel del Piano combines a historic town center with art, an annual tradition and landscapes on the edge of a high plateau. When planning your stay, you can focus on different things: the architectural history of the churches, the Palio on September 8, or hiking trails that start in Castel del Piano.

Alleys, Churches and Art

In the historic center, narrow cobbled streets, stone houses, loggias and small squares shape the townscape. The first official mention of Castel del Piano appears in documents from the Abbey of Monte Amiata dating to 890: at the time, the settlement was called “Casale Plana.” This early form of the name provides a historical reference point for a walk through the old town center.

The churches feature different construction periods and furnishings. One of them is the Chiesa della NativitĂ  di Maria. Built between the 17th and 19th centuries, it has a Latin-cross floor plan. Inside, it preserves works by Giuseppe Nicola Nasini and a historic 18th-century organ. The Chiesa del Santissimo Sacramento, also known as Chiesa Piccina, is a medieval single-nave church with works by Francesco Nasini.

The Chiesa di San Leonardo also brings together several periods: it dates to the 12th century and was restored in the Neo-Gothic style in 1915. Its details include frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as Renaissance features such as travertine surrounds. The Chiesa della SS. Madonna delle Grazie houses a 15th-century image of the Madonna attributed to the Sienese painter Sano di Pietro. The different periods of construction and works of art give a church visit a specific architectural and artistic focus.

Palazzo, City Gates and Palio

The 16th-century Palazzo Nerucci houses an art collection. This includes the Vegni Collection, which was donated in 1883. Among the historic gates, the Porta dell’Orologio stands out for its clock and bell; it forms part of the historic town walls. The Porta Pianese is also known as Porta Amiata or Porta Castiglionese and is located along the town’s old walls.

Another cultural highlight is the Palio delle Contrade di Castel del Piano. The festival takes place every year on September 8 and opens with a historic parade. If the Palio is the reason for your trip, you can plan your stay around that date. The historic architecture and the festival offer different ways to explore the town’s history: one through its preserved buildings and art, the other through an annual tradition.

Landscapes on the High Plateau

Castel del Piano lies on the edge of a high plateau. Uphill, the landscape is covered with chestnut and beech forests; downhill, olive groves, vineyards and fruit trees predominate.

The municipal area also includes Prati delle Macinaie and Prati della Contessa. Both lie at an altitude of about 1,300 to 1,400 meters. This elevation places the two named meadows in the context of the municipal landscape; it also provides a point of reference alongside the townscape and the lower-lying olive groves and vineyards.

Hiking Trails and Local Products

The 27-kilometer “Trekking dell’anello del Monte Amiata” hiking route can be started directly in Castel del Piano. The route “La salita delle Macinaie sul Monte Amiata,” also called “Salita di Castel del Piano,” also starts in town.

The “Strada del Vino Montecucco e dai sapori dell’Amiata,” a visitor route for discovering typical local products, also passes through Castel del Piano. It complements the hiking trails with another way to explore the region.
