Casole brings together several perspectives that are worth considering when choosing a destination: its historic centre, a distinctive rural landscape, and art and community-oriented culture. These themes can be seen at different scales—from the area around the historic centre to a large agricultural estate, a single painting and a biblical mural motif.

Landscape and rural character

The historic centre of Casole lies on the border of the Alto Collinare-Montano Nord system, in flat surroundings at the foot of a hill. A different scale can be seen at the Fattoria di Casole, which covers about 230 hectares. The estate includes grain fields and wheat cultivation, as well as chestnut groves, pastures, hay meadows and woodland. The Fattoria lies on the southern slope of the Apennines; its land ranges from about 350 to about 600 metres above sea level and offers exceptional views of the landscape.

The two perspectives complement one another without being conflated: the flat surroundings and the foot of the hill shape the picture of the historic centre, while the Fattoria is characterised by its elevation range, large area and variety of land uses. Those who view Casole through the lens of its landscape can thus connect both with the historic centre and with the Fattoria’s agricultural character.

Art and cultural heritage

One example of sacred art is the painting “San Cristoforo guada il fiume con Gesù Bambino” (“Saint Christopher Wades Across the River with the Christ Child”), associated with the Church of San Cristoforo in Casole. The Villa Pecori Giraldi complex also has historical and landscape significance. The two examples represent different forms of cultural heritage: a single sacred painting and a villa complex of historical and landscape importance.

Il Mulino: community and imagery

The Il Mulino community offers another cultural perspective. The Casa della Parola there was conceived as an open house for knowledge, encounter and dialogue. These guiding ideas bring learning and exchange together with the idea of gathering, giving the house a community-oriented role.

The chapel of the Il Mulino community was decorated with frescoes by the Jesuit Marko Ivan Rupnik and women collaborators from the Centro Aletti in Rome, including Stella Secchiaroli and Sister Elisa Galardi. The north-eastern wall of the chapel depicts the heavenly Jerusalem described in the Book of Revelation. This specific motif adds a clearly identifiable religious subject to the artistic decoration. Il Mulino can therefore be understood both through the guiding vision of the Casa della Parola and through the chapel’s frescoes.

Agricultural produce

Agricultural products are also a practical feature of Casole: the Azienda Agricola San Donnino sells extra virgin olive oil and chestnuts seasonally, directly from the farm. As both products are offered seasonally, it is advisable to ask about current availability before visiting. This adds a practical connection to the landscape and cultivation themes, through products sold directly at the farm.
