Badia A Passignano is shaped by its abbey, nature reserve, and offerings centred on wine and olive oil. Its attractions range from monastic history and art to hilly landscapes and tastings. When planning your visit, you can choose between different interests: architecture and culture, nature, or experiences centred on wine and olive oil.

Monastic History and Architecture

As early as the 11th century, the monastery adopted the Vallombrosan Rule under Giovanni Gualberto. Gualberto died at this monastery on 12 July 1073. The monastery complex is still surrounded by a square defensive wall dating from the 15th century, with towers at its corners. The abbey church reflects a later phase of construction: it was almost completely rebuilt from the second half of the 16th century onwards.

The abbey church has a Latin cross floor plan. Inside are frescoes by Il Passignano and Alessandro Allori. The monastery kitchen is also one of the notable historic rooms: it has remained almost unchanged since the 18th century. The monastery complex thus brings together architectural and artistic features from different centuries.

You can request a guided tour of the abbey by making a reservation in advance. The tour includes the Church of San Michele and the refectory, with The Last Supper by Domenico Ghirlandaio. If you are planning a visit, be sure to make your reservation in advance.

Nature Reserve, Landscape and Trails

The Badia a Passignano nature reserve was established by the Municipality of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa in 2008 and covers 364 hectares. Its hilly landscape is characterised by a variety of features: some hills are covered with vineyards or cultivated fields, while others are covered with olive groves or woodland. These areas are part of a landscape typical of Chianti. The reserve is also home to 17 mammal species.

A starting point for the Anello del Guardingo Passignano is also specified, with a place to leave your car: at the intersection of Via Poggio al Vento and Via di Greve. The Via Romea Sanese runs from San Casciano in Val di Pesa to Badia A Passignano. The details serve different purposes: for the Anello, a starting point with parking is described; for the Via Romea Sanese, the route’s two endpoints are given.

Wine and Olive Oil

Wine experiences include both a guided tour of the cellars at Badia a Passignano and tastings at Agricola La Badia. The cellar tour is subject to one clear condition: it is available by reservation only. Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione is made from the vineyards surrounding the monastery.

Agricola La Badia offers private wine and olive oil tastings. The offerings also include walks through the vineyards and olive groves. Guests can also taste products made by the estate from its vineyards and olive groves. The activities therefore differ in focus: the cellar tour centres on the wine cellars of Badia a Passignano, while Agricola La Badia focuses on private tastings, walks and the estate’s products.
