Sesto Fiorentino: Culture, Ceramics and Nature
Accommodation in Sesto Fiorentino
Sesto Fiorentino brings together a variety of cultural and landscape themes: porcelain and maiolica, the history of villas and gardens, Etruscan tomb architecture, and wetlands. Consider which of these interests you would like to shape your trip. The range extends from collections and sacred art to protected natural areas and historic gardens.
Ceramics, Art and Sacred Spaces
The Museo Ginori houses a collection of nearly 10,000 porcelain and maiolica objects, dating from 1737 to 1990. The Archivio della Ceramica Sestese offers another perspective on the history of ceramics: it preserves thousands of ceramic objects, models, plaster moulds, sketches and historic photographs. The two places represent different aspects of the subject—the collection’s broad time span and the archive’s varied object and visual records.
Churches, too, preserve remarkable ceramic and artistic works. The Chiesa di San Romolo in Colonnata contains numerous porcelain furnishings. The Chiesa di Santa Maria e San Jacopo in Querceto houses an altar of marbled terracotta, created by the Manifattura Ginori between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Pieve di San Martino preserves a carved wooden cross painted by Agnolo Gaddi around 1390.
Etruscan Tombs and Local History
The Tomba della Montagnola is one of central Italy’s most important Etruscan tomb monuments. A virtual tour and visits to the exterior and interior are available; physical access is partial. The Tomba della Mula offers another insight into Etruscan architecture: it is considered a notable example of the Orientalising period and is distinguished by the absence of a central pillar. It was built in the middle of the second half of the 7th century BC as a funerary monument for an exceptionally wealthy princely family.
The Palazzo Pretorio is also part of the town’s history: during the Florentine Republic, it was the seat of the Podestà of Sesto. These historic sites tell us not only about architectural forms and art, but also about past political functions.
Villas, Gardens and Theatre
The garden of Villa Guicciardini Corsi Salviati documents stylistic layers and changes spanning more than three centuries, from 1500 onward. Around the middle of the 17th century, Giovanni and Lorenzo Corsi commissioned Gherardo Silvani and Baccio del Bianco to work on the villa and its garden. The restored forms that survive today date from a comprehensive redesign carried out approximately between 1708 and 1750. These periods help us understand the estate as the result of several phases of development.
Villa Gerini has been documented as a country residence since the 14th century. Its park dates from the 19th century and includes a holm oak grove criss-crossed by paths. An artificial lake has two islands and a pavilion intended as a tea room. Teatro Limonaia is housed in the former orangery of Villa Corsi Salviati Guicciardini. Since 2013, it has been the home of the Residenza Multipla theatre residency, recognised by the Region of Tuscany.
Wetlands and Landscape
Parco della Piana is a protected area of around 50 hectares, established to restore a former wetland ecosystem. The area lies along an important migratory route used by cranes, flamingos and wild geese. The restored area of Oasi WWF Val di Rose includes a lake basin, numerous marshes and wet meadows, as well as habitats characterised by trees and shrubs. The measures are intended to preserve flora and fauna. A visitor trail runs through the historic core and the newer, restored area.
Monte Morello also shapes the landscape: within the territory of Sesto Fiorentino, it covers around 1,700 hectares and is of considerable landscape and ecological importance. The wetlands of the plain and the extensive area of Monte Morello offer different perspectives on the local landscape.
