Rignano Sull'arno lies in the Valdarno, between the course of the Arno River and the hills. Vineyards, olive groves and country paths shape the landscape, alongside Romanesque parish churches, historic places and hiking trails of varying distances and walking times. You can reach the town by car via the A1 and by train with frequent connections from Florence railway station. Check train timetables before you travel.

Choose hiking trails by distance and time

The network of hiking trails passes through forests, hills, rural areas and places of historic interest. Three described routes give a concrete idea of the different time commitments: the Discover Rignano – Pievi, Chiese e Castelli loop starts at the Pieve di San Leolino. It is listed as an easy route covering 10.8 kilometres, with a walking time of 3 hours 30 minutes and an elevation gain of 283 metres.

The easy Anello di Volognano starts in Bombone and covers 8.5 kilometres in 3 hours. Its route passes through olive groves, vineyards and fortified villages; along the way, there are views of the Arno Valley and the Pratomagno massif. At 5 kilometres, the Sentiero della Memoria is shorter: this easy loop starts at Cimitero della Badiuzza, takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and has an elevation gain of 130 metres. As with the distance, the approximate duration and elevation gain are also part of planning this route.

The trails also represent different themes: the Anello di Volognano combines hiking with rural landscapes and views, while the Sentiero della Memoria is connected to the history of remembrance. The Via di Francesco also passes through Rignano Sull'arno. It is part of a Tuscan trail network linking places associated with the life of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Churches, bridges and traces of history

The Pieve di San Leolino is probably one of the oldest Romanesque parish churches in the Florentine countryside. The church contains a fragment of the Madonna della Consolazione fresco by Bicci di Lorenzo. Visits are listed as requiring reservations on weekdays; on Saturdays and Sundays, visits are scheduled during Mass. Check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Castelluccio, too, has a specific historical date and a trace in the landscape: it was first documented in 1086 under the Latin name Castellum de Regnano. The ruins of the fortified site lie in a small olive grove on the grounds of the Fattoria di Pagnana. Castelluccio has been known since at least the 1980s as an archaeological site with important medieval remains, and it is visited. The Castello di Volognano, in turn, dates from the 11th century; its walls enclose a fortified village.

The Abbey of Santa Maria is in Rosano, within the municipality of Rignano Sull'arno. Founded in 780, it has always been home to a cloistered Benedictine community of women. The abbey church also contains a painted crucifixion dated to the 12th century, which was recently restored by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. The Ponte di Rignano, also known as the Ponte Mediceo or Ponte San Clemente, is considered the oldest bridge in the Valdarno and connects the two banks of the Arno at Rignano.

Sites associated with the history of remembrance include Villa Il Focardo and the Einstein-Mazzetti family tomb at Cimitero della Badiuzza. The villa is linked to the massacre of members of the family on 3 August 1944. The tomb is a destination for visits and moments of remembrance.

Landscape, olive oil and local events

The area includes hamlets scattered amid greenery, Romanesque parish churches and cultivated fields. Olives are grown to produce extra virgin olive oil; Rignano Sull'arno is also within the Chianti DOCG area. This indicates a regional designation, not necessarily a specific place to visit or taste products.

Local events can also help with planning for the year: the Festa delle Frittelle takes place in February and March in San Donato in Collina, and the Sagra del Tartufo takes place in June in Cellai. The Tiro del Cacio is listed for 2 June and 26 December in Torri. If you would like to plan a trip around one of these dates, check the event dates in advance.
