Luia: Village History, Paths and Vineyards
Accommodation in Luia
Luia lies within the municipality of Certaldo and is considered an ancient open village (villaggio aperto). Its local history and cultural landscape shape different aspects of the destination: paths, sacred architectural history, and olive and wine cultivation. When planning your visit, you can choose between a short walk to the village and a longer circular route.
Paths and Landscape Around Luia
Via Piana branches off at the Oratorio di San Francesco and leads to the village in a few minutes on foot. Access via this path offers a view of the Rio Apoli valley, with vineyards and olive groves. The route thus combines the walk to the village with a particular view of the landscape.
A circular route described in 2020 is five kilometers long and leads to Casa padronale Rogai-La Fornace near the rural village of Luia. It follows the ridge between the Elsa and Pesa valleys, passing through vineyards, olive groves, old churches and villages. Unlike Via Piana, this loop takes you not only to the village but also to a named destination in the landscape. Check current trail conditions in advance, and find out whether access to the circular route needs to be organized.
The paths also differ in their landscape setting: Via Piana offers a view of the Rio Apoli valley, while the circular route follows the ridge between the Elsa and Pesa valleys. In the wider Luia and Pozzo area, cultivation depends on elevation and soil. Olive trees still predominate at higher elevations. Vineyards have been planted at lower elevations, where the clay content is higher.
Local History and Sacred Architecture
The oratory in Luia is said to have been founded in 1589 by Cino di Matteo di Cino. The chapel in Luia is said to have been dedicated to Saint Francis and the Assumption of Mary. Together, these details give the village’s sacred history a specific temporal and religious character.
A branch of the Pitti family is said to have settled in Luia after being expelled from Semifonte. The historic manor house Casa padronale Rogai was associated with ownership of large parts of the houses and lands belonging to the nearby rural village of Luia. These two historical accounts emphasize different aspects: one concerns a family settlement, while the other describes a manor house’s ownership ties to village houses and land.
In the Certaldo area, Cappella Rogai is one of the Tuscan chapels inspired by the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore. For architecture enthusiasts, this connection to the dome offers a different focus from the local history of the oratory and chapel in Luia.
Wine Growing and Product History
Tenuta della Luia has a Merlot vineyard right beside the village of Luia. The Luia selection by Tenuta della Luia is a red wine in the Supertuscan style, with Merlot particularly prominent. Luia wine was first produced in 2001. Thus, alongside the vineyards in the landscape, there is specific information about the wine’s style, emphasis on Merlot and start of production.
