Nisporto lies west of Rio nell’Elba, in a narrow, horseshoe-shaped bay at the end of a small valley that slopes down from Monte Capannello to the sea. The beach faces north. It is sheltered by Punta di Nisporto to the west and Poggio La Guardia to the east. The valley, mountainside and coast give the area a distinctive landscape setting.

Bay, Beach and Sea

Nisporto beach is suitable for swimming and activities to explore the sea. If you want to focus your stay primarily on the beach, these options are an obvious part of your planning. The shape of the bay and the named coastal landmarks also help place Nisporto’s stretch of coastline geographically, without conflating it with the hiking destinations nearby.

Pedal boats and small boats are available to rent at the beach; this service may be seasonal. There are also bars and restaurants, although visitor services may change seasonally. Several car parks are located along the road to the beach. As parking options may change, it is worth checking the latest information if you are arriving by car. The same applies if boat hire or dining options are important for your travel dates.

The Fornace della Ballerina and Nisporto’s History

On the left-hand side of Nisporto beach are the remains of an old kiln made of stone and red bricks, known as the Fornace della Ballerina. The Soprintendenza has classified the Fornace as a building of historical and artistic interest. Lime and bricks were made in the kiln; rowing boats transported the products to Portoferraio.

The place name also has a historical record: in Giovanni Antonio Magini’s 1598 cartography, Nisporto is recorded as “Disporto Grande”. Another connection to the Ballerina is part of the beach’s events calendar. Every year on 10 August, the love story of the “Prince” and the Ballerina of Nisporto is reenacted there.

Hiking Trails Nearby

Trails may also be a factor when choosing where to stay. The circular route near Nisportino starts and ends at Nisportino beach and is accessible from Nisporto via a paved road. Along the Nisportino route, nearby cliffs drop steeply to the sea; kestrels and peregrine falcons nest there. This describes a hiking option in the surrounding area, not Nisporto beach itself.

Another hiking option is Trail 201, which leads to Nisporto beach. This means that, in addition to swimming and activities on the sea, there are hiking destinations to choose from in the surrounding area. The two trails mentioned have different destinations: the circular route ends at Nisportino beach, while Trail 201 leads to Nisporto beach. If you are looking for a hotel in Nisporto, you can take these differences into account, along with your interests in the beach, history and hiking, when choosing your destination.
