Campo Ai Peri is a destination for travelers who want to include GTE stages and trails on Monte Orello in their trip plans. Route information lists the place name in different contexts: as an alternative stage point, as a passage on a stage, and as part of a dedicated trekking route. If you are planning your hike and hotel stay together, it is worth considering the specific section and overnight location separately.

GTE stages near Campo Ai Peri

A route overview for the National Park, updated on March 15, 2025, lists a stage from Cavo to Porto Azzurro among the Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE) route options, with Buraccio/Campo ai Peri appearing as an alternative stage point. This should be distinguished from the second stage, from Porto Azzurro to Procchio: it passes through Campo Ai Peri and is listed as 21.33 km. The published distance may change slightly as routes are updated. The vineyards of Campo Ai Peri are also reached on this stage.

Another GTE section leads downhill from Campo Ai Peri to Porto Azzurro via Trail 210. The 21.33 km, however, refers to the Porto Azzurro–Procchio stage, not the section along Trail 210. When comparing the information for hike planning, be sure to check the endpoints and the direction of each route.

Hiking trails, scenery, and Monte Orello

From Campo Ai Peri, the GTE heads towards Monte Orello through fragrant rosemary and broom. Further along, the descent from Monte Orello joins an old, wide military road shaded by dense Mediterranean maquis. The description thus distinguishes the section towards Monte Orello from the later descent. For nature and history enthusiasts, Monte Orello offers two things side by side: Mediterranean vegetation and military remains.

On the route over Monte Orello, an old military fortification used during the Second World War stands in a clearing. The summit is 337 metres above sea level; further remains of military forts can be found there. The military remains add a historical dimension to the hiking route.

Getting there and accommodation

Access to the Campo Ai Peri–Monte Orello–Acquabona trekking route is at the junction of the road from Buraccio and the provincial road near Casa Marchetti. Bus routes 117 and 118 run along the SP 26 between Portoferraio and Porto Azzurro. Their frequency may vary by season, so check the timetable for your travel dates.

For hotel planning, it is important to note that there are no accommodation facilities along the GTE. You will need to descend to inhabited areas to stay overnight.
