Camaldoli – Forest, Hermitage and Monastic History
Accommodation in Camaldoli
Camaldoli brings together forest landscapes and monastic architecture and art history. The Camaldoli Biogenetic Nature Reserve lies within the Foreste Casentinesi National Park, is part of the Natura 2000 network and covers 1,169 hectares. Alongside this natural area, specific places are central: the Monastero, the Sacro Eremo, a forest trail focused on botany and the National Park information point. Nature, history and visitor services are distinct aspects of the destination.
Sacro Eremo and Monastero
The Sacro Eremo di Camaldoli was consecrated in 1027. It is about three kilometres from the Monastero, secluded in the heart of the forest at an altitude of around 1,100 metres. Visitors can see the guesthouse, church, old refectory and cell of Saint Romuald at the Eremo. Its distance from the Monastero and its forest setting make the Eremo a distinct historical site to visit; the spaces mentioned bring its architecture to life.
The library of the Sacro Eremo was purpose-built in 1620 opposite the Eremo church, above Saint Romuald’s cell. The manuscript library and incunabula were subsequently moved there. Both the building’s precise location and the later transfer of the collection are therefore part of its history. In the Monastero, the church houses a painting of the Nativity by Giorgio Vasari. The history of the Antica Farmacia in Camaldoli is inseparable from the monastery’s guesthouse. Together, the library, painting and pharmacy offer different ways into the history of the two monastic sites.
Forest trails and nature
The Sentiero Natura Camaldoli offers an introduction to botany and features trees of the forest, including the silver fir and the impressive Miraglia chestnut. Loop trail no. 7 runs around the Foresta di Camaldoli, is considered challenging and is suitable for hikers with some experience. The trails have different focuses: the Sentiero Natura highlights plant life, while the difficulty of loop trail no. 7 is an important guide when choosing it. So when deciding between the two trails, you can take both the subject matter and your own hiking experience into account.
Museum and National Park services
The National Park information point in Camaldoli includes the Museo Ornitologico, with the “Biggeri” collection, exhibition trails and educational facilities. The collection gives the museum its ornithological focus, while the exhibition trails and educational facilities offer further ways to engage with the subject. The information point provides information materials, sells Park publications and souvenirs, and lets visitors book excursions. It is therefore a place for both museum visits and practical Park information and excursion options.
Spiritual retreats and language courses
The Monastero’s Foresteria offers biblical, theological and spiritual retreats, as well as days of reflection focused on monastic spirituality. It also offers introductory and advanced courses in the biblical languages of Hebrew and Greek. The course levels are explicitly differentiated between beginner and advanced, while the spiritual days focus on monastic spirituality. During Advent and Lent, the Foresteria also offers days of reflection that are open to everyone, including young people. When planning a trip, both the different themes and the seasonal timing of these retreats are therefore relevant.
