Palazzuolo offers several concrete starting points when choosing a destination: its location on a ridge, its historical links to the Rocca and the Castellare, and the Palazzuolo–La Casa and Anello – Verniana – Gargonza – Palazzuolo trekking routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Palazzuolo, you can weigh up whether local history, scenery, or hiking is most important for your stay.

Location on a ridge

Palazzuolo lies on the summit of a mountain of the same name, on a ridge. The town and the mountain share the same name. A ridge is the longer elevated crest of the landscape, placing the summit location within a broader geographical context. Belvedere Casini is a viewpoint and therefore another named feature of the landscape.

Rocca, Castellare, and parish church

The Ubertini of Arezzo ruled from the ancient Rocca of Palazzuolo. Visible remains of the walls of the ancient Castellare have been preserved in the upper part of the town. The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Giusto is a parish church in Palazzuolo and adds an ecclesiastical aspect to the town’s history. A parish church is the church of a parish.

Trekking routes in the area

The Palazzuolo–La Casa hiking trail is one of the trekking routes that can be walked in the Monte San Savino area. The Anello – Verniana – Gargonza – Palazzuolo loop passes through the areas of Verniana, Gargonza, and Palazzuolo. Before Palazzuolo, this loop reaches the highest point of the day at 574 m above sea level. The different reference points are useful when comparing the routes: the first is identified by its name and its classification as a trekking route; for the loop, the three areas it passes through and a specific elevation point are also provided. The 574 m marks the highest point of the day on the loop, not Palazzuolo’s elevation.

Historical transitions and the loop from Verniana

In 1381, the Ubertini sold the town, along with Gargonza Castle, to Siena. In 1385 Palazzuolo passed to Florence, and in 1404 it returned to Siena. The Verniana–Gargonza–Palazzuolo loop is about 17 kilometres long, starts and ends in Verniana, and is rated difficulty E. On the first ridge, the La Casa farmhouse, at 554 metres, lies roughly halfway along the first ridge. Before Palazzuolo, the route reaches its highest point of the day at 574 metres; this elevation is part of the route and does not indicate the town’s elevation. The described route then leads via San Giustino di Sopra at 487 metres to Gargonza at 543 metres, and descends via Renaiolo at 453 metres on the way back towards Verniana. The municipal tourism website also lists the Palazzuolo–La Casa loop and the Palazzuolo–Cavalbianco and Palazzuolo–Molin del Diavolo trails as trekking routes in the municipality. Before setting out on a hike, check current trail conditions and the complete route of your chosen trail.
