Loro Ciuffenna can be explored through art and mill history as well as through the landscape of Pratomagno. When planning your trip, you can consider these themes separately: Venturino Venturi’s work and Il Mulino offer insights into the town’s history, while Le Balze reveals a landscape shaped by geology. The routes and truffle hunting each offer a distinct focus, too.

Art and Local History

The Museo Venturino Venturi was established following a gift from the artist to the municipality: Venturino Venturi donated 93 sculptures and drawings on the condition that a museum dedicated to his work be established. The museum comprises seven sections, organized around the main themes of Venturi’s artistic research. This lets you explore the collection by theme rather than as a single, undifferentiated group.

A municipal visitor information page, last updated on March 17, 2025, lists the Archivio Venturino Venturi as open to visitors. Check the latest information before your visit. The Ponte Romanico, also known as the Ponte Vecchio, is located in the gorge of the Torrente Ciuffenna in Fondaccio, the oldest and most distinctive part of town. Both names refer to the same bridge, so you may come across either one in descriptions.

Il Mulino and Its Milling Technology

Il Mulino was built around the year 1000 on the edge of a gorge along the Torrente Ciuffenna and is considered the oldest watermill in Tuscany still in operation. The mill is currently being renovated. Its small museum contains three stone millstones, powered by a water-driven wooden mechanism. The description makes the technology tangible through specific components: water powers the mechanism, which turns the millstones.

In recent years, only dried chestnuts have been ground at Il Mulino. This time reference adds a specific example of the mill’s more recent use to its technical history. Taken together, the millstones and chestnut processing tell two parts of the story: the mechanism and what has been ground there in more recent times.

Le Balze and the Landscape of Pratomagno

The Le Balze nature reserve lies in the upper Valdarno, at the foot of Pratomagno, between the Resco and Ciuffenna streams. It is jointly managed by the municipalities of Castelfranco di Sopra, Loro Ciuffenna, Pian di Scò and Terranuova Bracciolini. Geological erosion has formed gullies, balze and erosion pillars there. These landforms shape a landscape of particular scenic and ecological interest.

The southern side of the Pratomagno massif around Loro Ciuffenna offers another way to experience nature, with excursions among impressive waterfalls and clear pools. Le Balze’s geological formations and the water-rich scenery along these excursions offer different ways to plan your trip around landscape themes.

Cammino dei Setteponti and Truffle Hunting

The Cammino dei Setteponti can be considered in terms of mode of travel and time required: on foot, the route can be completed in two or three days; by bicycle, in one or two days. The cycling time depends on fitness and available time. The trail runs from Pieve di Cascia or Donnini to Buriano di Castiglion Fibocchi.

During the Caccia al tartufo in the woodland around Odina, participants can accompany a Lagotto as it searches for and digs up truffles. The experience then includes a tasting of freshly gathered truffles with bread, oil and other dishes of the day. In this way, the activity combines a woodland search with a tasting. Availability and seasonal details may change; check in advance whether the experience is available for your travel dates.
