Pozzo Della Chiana combines the history of sacred architecture with memories of the Battle of Scannagallo and local traditions. A nature trail and recurring events add to these themes. When planning your trip, it is worth considering whether you are more interested in architecture, the historic landscape or events throughout the year: these interests lead to different aspects of the town.

Temples and the History of the Battle

At the entrance to the town stands the Tempio di Santo Stefano alla Vittoria. It was built between 1569 and 1572 and is attributed to Giorgio Vasari. The name Tempio Sacrario di Santo Stefano della Vittoria is also associated with the building: Cosimo de’ Medici commissioned the temple to commemorate the Florentine victory at the Battle of Scannagallo.

The Tempio di Santo Stefano della Vittoria is dedicated to Saint Stephen. His feast day is August 2, the same day the battle took place in 1554. These dates place the building’s history and the historical event in context: the battle predates the construction of the temple, while its dedication puts Saint Stephen at the centre.

Nature Trails and Historic Landscapes

The five-kilometre Itinerario di San Francesco is a nature trail connecting Foiano della Chiana with the Tempio di Santa Vittoria in Pozzo della Chiana. This makes it easy to understand the route by reference to two specific points: Foiano della Chiana and the temple mentioned above. Its length and the connection between its endpoints make the trail a distinct consideration for trip planning, without assuming a particular walking time.

The Scannagallo Valley is another historic landscape. The battle of the same name took place there in 1554, and a nature trail runs through the valley. Here, landscape and history can be considered together: the valley’s name refers to the same event commemorated by the temple.

Passion Traditions During Holy Week

On Good Friday, a Way of the Cross is performed in Pozzo Della Chiana, with live depictions of each Station of the Passion. The centuries-old Gloria tradition is revived as part of the current Holy Week programme. A special mechanism raises the statue of Christ above the altar.

The two customs have different emphases: the Way of the Cross depicts each Station of the Passion, while the raising of the statue of Christ is the defining moment of the Gloria. Those interested in religious traditions can therefore experience two different ways of learning about the Passion story in Pozzo Della Chiana.

Recurring Events and Local Gatherings

A historical re-enactment of the Battle of Scannagallo takes place every year in Pozzo Della Chiana. The Premio Valentina Giovagnini is also held annually: the singing competition takes place in September. A historical re-enactment and a competition are thus at the heart of two distinct types of events. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the exact dates in advance.

Shared meals are also among the local offerings: the Associazione per il Pozzo organises traditional dinners and snacks that tourists can join. This adds an opportunity to enjoy a meal together to the historical and cultural themes.
