Tegoleto: San Biagio, Tower and Local History
Accommodation in Tegoleto
Tegoleto can be explored through its architectural and ecclesiastical history, as well as through the town’s festivals and markets. The Romanesque church of San Biagio, the later church of the same name, and the medieval tower represent different historical layers; San Biagio also features in the events calendar. If you are looking for a hotel in Tegoleto, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: local history and surviving heritage, or a visit timed to one of the events mentioned.
San Biagio: the Romanesque church and its later replacement
The Romanesque church of San Biagio already existed in the 10th century and was renovated in the 12th century. The remains of its apse can be seen in Tegoleto. The new church of San Biagio was built in 1787 to replace the older, dilapidated church. The town’s history therefore offers two distinct architectural traces: the remains of the Romanesque predecessor and the later replacement building. The 12th-century renovation belongs to the history of the Romanesque church; in 1787, by contrast, a new building was added to replace it.
The medieval tower in the town center
The medieval tower has survived to this day in the center of Tegoleto. It is the only surviving trace of the town’s medieval defensive structures. Its later history is distinct: the tower was renovated several times and eventually converted into a farmhouse. The building thus connects the history of medieval defense with later agricultural use. Those interested in local history will find here another tangible trace of Tegoleto, alongside its church buildings and their different phases.
San Biagio and recurring events
Saint Blaise, known in Italian as San Biagio, is Tegoleto’s patron saint; his feast day is celebrated on February 3. The Fiera di San Biagio follows a different schedule: it is held every year on the Sunday after February 3. This distinction is useful when planning, since the patron saint’s feast falls on a fixed date, while the Fiera’s date depends on the day of the week. If you would like to plan your stay around the Fiera, check the date of that year’s event.
Route and agricultural heritage
Tegoleto is a stop on the municipality’s third route, “i nuclei di piano.” The landscape offers another way to explore local history: Tegoleto lies on flat terrain along the Senese-Aretina road, and the fertile surrounding area historically made the town an important center for producing and collecting agricultural goods. Tegoleto’s history therefore encompasses not only its ecclesiastical and medieval buildings, but also its agricultural role. The route and landscape add two further perspectives on the town to its architectural history.
Local producers at the Mercato dei sapori e della terra
The “Mercato dei sapori e della terra” is an annual event in Tegoleto. A municipal notice dated April 11, 2025, describes a sixth edition held in the upgraded Piazza della Chiesa. At that edition, numerous local producers presented regional specialties such as cured meats, cheese, wine, craft beer, and heritage grain varieties. The selection therefore ranges from food and drink to traditional grains. If you would like to visit Tegoleto for the market, check the date of that year’s event before planning your stay around it.
