Cetica consists of several small, scattered settlements along the upper reaches of the Torrente Solano. Woodpiles and cultivated terraces shape the landscape. The Ecomuseum, village church, local traditions and connections with nature offer different themes to consider when planning your trip.

Ecomuseum and local crafts

The Ecomuseum of the Charcoal Maker is housed in the former village school, opposite the old Romanesque church of Sant'Angelo. The museum’s green area includes reconstructed charcoal burners’ huts and a charcoal pit, created for educational and demonstration purposes. These installations illustrate charcoal making.

At the Scuola dei Nonni, residents tell their stories, give demonstrations and share their own experiences. The activities are intended for organised educational groups. The Molino del Balenajo also offers insight into local crafts: visitors can still learn about the local technique of stone milling there today.

Festivals and local cuisine

The Ecomuseum’s regular events include the Potato Festival in July, also known as Festa a Cetica. The Porcini Mushroom Festival is held in August or September. Check local festival dates before your trip.

The Patata Rossa di Cetica is closely associated with the area and is used in traditional dishes such as tortelli and gnocchi. Its availability may vary by season. The potato features both in the festival’s name and in the local culinary tradition.

Church and works of art

The church of San Michele Arcangelo, also known as San Angelo, has Romanesque architectural features; its origins probably date back to a Vallombrosan monastery. The church houses a 15th-century panel painting of the Madonna and Child by Pesellino. There is also a triptych dated 1357, depicting the Madonna, Child and saints. It was recently attributed to the stylistic school of Taddeo Gaddi.

History and local tradition

Castello di S. Angelo was once the court of the Counts Guidi. The Florentines destroyed it in 1290 on their return from a campaign in the Aretino area. In the local tradition of I Vecchioni, the New Year is welcomed with songs, jumps and dances, accompanied by accordion, mandolin and guitar.

Landscape and excursions

Bagno di Cetica lies in a small valley with natural meadows among beech and chestnut woodland. From Bagni di Cetica, visitors can reach the extensive summit meadows of Pratomagno, a popular destination for excursions. Check local conditions before setting out on a walk.

If you are looking for a hotel in Cetica, your travel interests can help guide your choice: art and local history, festival dates or the landscapes of Pratomagno each offer a different focus.
