Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni brings together the history of an abandoned mining village with preserved cultural heritage and art. From 1963 onward, the old village was gradually abandoned because lignite mining had affected the stability of the promontory. The historic center was preserved; the old Borgo was restored and rehabilitated. The consequences of mining and the preservation of the historic townscape are therefore central to the village’s history. Other highlights include a large-scale mural, religious art, and places of remembrance. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing these enduring themes from individual event programs.

Old Village History and Mining

MINE is housed in several buildings in the Vecchio Borgo. It documents and celebrates the history of the area, where lignite was mined for 150 years to generate energy and support development. At the same time, the museum is temporarily closed to the public. Check its visitor status before traveling rather than assuming you will be able to visit. The village’s history is also connected with cinema: Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni was a filming location for Alessandro Benvenuti’s film “Ivo il tardivo”.

Mural, Church Art, and Places of Remembrance

The “Murale per la pace” by Venturino Venturi is located in Piazza Sandro Pertini. The mural is 76 meters long and covers an area of 305 square meters. Its theme is the eternal contrast between war and peace. These measurements describe both its length and the area it covers.

The village’s history is also visible in its churches. Remains of the old fortress have been partially incorporated into the Church of San Donato, high on the hill. The modern parish church of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni houses a painting of the Madonna and Child enthroned with saints. The work dates from the 15th century and was brought from the old village church. A monument to the Resistance has stood in the square beside a church since April 1984.

The “Strada della Memoria” includes the Chiesa-Auditorium, the adjacent road, and the associated grounds. The route recalls the history and significance of the buildings connected with the events of July 4, 1944. Since the area has changed as a result of restoration work, check access before your visit.

Landscape and Event Programs

The former mining area is considered a lush green oasis, enriched by the artificial lake of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni. The landscape offers a different way to explore the village’s history than the museum and buildings: the focus here is on the former mining area itself, while the historic sites evoke its past.

One Festa della Primavera program included two trekking routes. The longer route was 13 kilometers long and followed forest paths through villages and past parish churches. A shorter route followed the white roads of the former mine to a point near the old center of Castelnuovo in Avane. The routes thus differed both in length and in their described features. A Festa della Primavera also included a Sagra delle Frittelle, with sweet and savory frittelle. If you are planning your trip around one of these routes or the festival activities, check the program for the relevant edition.
