When planning a trip to Salutio, there are several themes to choose from: the private Mulino del Bonano watermill, the Romanesque Pieve di Sant’Eleuterio, the history of the castle and outdoor activities. They differ both in their historical focus and in the conditions you should check in advance.

Watermill and Waterways

A municipal description, updated on 16 July 2025, reports that the private Mulino del Bonano is still operating with its waterwheel and processing local produce. The Ecomuseo del Casentino’s waterways or watermill trail includes the mill in Salutio. Its inclusion in the cultural trail should be distinguished from the private arrangements for visits.

The mill is privately owned. Contact the owners in advance to find out whether access can be arranged and whether a practical demonstration of milling may be possible. This lets you confirm whether a visit can be arranged, rather than assuming that inclusion in the trail guarantees access.

Pieve di Sant’Eleuterio

The Pieve di Sant’Eleuterio in Salutio is a Romanesque church with Byzantine influences and Baroque elements. Its frescoes include 15th-century works by Mariotto da Cristofano, a painter from Valdarno. Its architecture and paintings therefore offer different points of reference for art history.

The baptismal font also has distinctive details: its base is thought to come from a reused column, while its painted decoration dates back to the 16th century. The frescoes and the painting on the baptismal font thus belong to different centuries, while the origin of the base remains explicitly uncertain.

Castle and Castello

The castle of Salutio is documented from the beginning of the 12th century. Over the centuries, it was transformed into a noble palace and became the residence of the Teri noble family. The place above Salutio is still called Castello today. The castle’s recorded history therefore encompasses both its early documentation and its later transformation into a noble residence.

Guided Horse-Riding Trails

An editorial description from January 2023 mentions numerous horse-riding trails in Salutio, accompanied by a riding guide from Centro Ippico Antares. The trails described pass through forests and offer views of the natural landscape from open areas. If you plan this activity, ask about current availability before your trip.

Getting Around and Your Stay

Salutio is on the Strada Valdarno Casentinese, which connects Talla and Rassina. The Proloco di Salutio is the local tourism organization. If you would like to ask them for planning information, contact them directly to find out what assistance is currently available.

Santa Maria del Bagno is near Salutio, about two kilometres beyond the Salutio stream. The former monastery is now used as a scout centre. If you are considering a visit, check the current arrangements in advance.

If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Salutio, use these themes to help you choose: the Pieve and the castle focus on sacred art and local history; for the private mill and the horse-riding trails, check the relevant conditions in advance. This lets you plan around your interests without assuming that the same visiting arrangements apply everywhere.
