Fresciano lies at 798 metres above sea level on an extensive high plateau. At the same time, the town retains the characteristics of a typical early medieval feudal district. The elevation gives a precise figure, while the plateau describes the broader landscape. While the elevation and plateau describe the natural setting, the feudal district reflects its historical character. Thus, landscape and history offer two distinct points of reference when you consider Fresciano as a travel destination.

Sacred Art and Local Tradition

The parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Fresciano brings together a work of art and a dated memorial. The church houses a Robbiana terracotta by the brothers Santi and Benedetto Buglioni. It depicts Christ handing the keys to Saint Peter. There is also a commemorative plaque dated 1603. The image is defined by its religious subject, while the plaque adds a different emphasis with its date.

Another element of the religious heritage is the Madonna delle Grazie Sanctuary in Fresciano di Sotto, in the vicinity of Fresciano. Its existence has been known since 1300. Local tradition also calls it Madonna della Neve. According to legend, snow appeared around the chapel on August 5. In the vicinity of Fresciano, in Fresciano di Sotto, the Madonna delle Grazie festival is celebrated each year on the same date. The name Madonna della Neve refers to the story, while the festival is an annual celebration.

Bridges, Routes, and Landscape

The history of the bridges connects Fresciano with different periods. The Tibetan Bridge on the Via di Francesco in Tuscany opened in August 2023 in Fresciano di Sotto, at the site of the former Romanesque bridge, and was subsequently inspected and approved. The remains of an ancient Romanesque bridge near Fresciano once connected the town with Badia Tedalda. The new crossing has a precise opening date; by contrast, the connection with Badia Tedalda was part of the older bridge's historical function.

La Via del Ponte offers another historical and scenic perspective. In Rofelle, the route leads to the ancient church of Santa Maria, documented since the 12th century. The ruins of the Mulino del Barucco, a former water-powered grain mill, can also be seen along the route. A short detour from the route leads to Montebotolino, which offers views of the Valmarecchia and the Alpe della Luna. For practical planning, note the current restriction: La Via del Ponte is currently impassable due to gas pipeline construction. The Tibetan Bridge is part of the Via di Francesco; the current closure, however, applies to La Via del Ponte. These are two distinct route references to bear in mind.

For the broader travel overview: Badia Tedalda.
