Pietra and the Sentiero alpinistico del Coràza

Pietra and the Sentiero alpinistico del Coràza
For a trip to Pietra, the Sentiero alpinistico del Coràza is a specific point of reference. Pietra is a small hamlet below Cimone, accessible via a short turnoff from the SP 25 at kilometre 6 from Aldeno. The trail starts in Pietra and leads to Sella NE Doss d'Abramo. This links the small starting point with a precisely named destination on the route.
Length, rock formations and return route
The SAT trail catalogue, updated as of 31 December 2024, lists a length of 6,070 m and 50 m of equipped sections. The 6,070 m describes the total length, while the 50 m refers to the extent of the equipped sections. From the summit of Cima Verde, the return route follows Sentiero 630 towards Baita Sparavei, then rejoins the outbound route to Pietra. Trail conditions can vary seasonally, so check them before your hike.
A long rock ledge beneath a rock overhang at the foot of Pala Granda is part of the route. The rocks along the route consist of oolitic Jurassic limestone, formed around 170 million years ago. The trail also follows a ridge to the summit of Cima Verde. The rock ledge, overhang and ridge describe the terrain; the information about the rock adds the area's geological history to this picture.
Detour to Bait del Coraza
A short detour from the trail leads to Bait del Coraza at an altitude of about 1,880 m. The route heads towards a gorge, at the bottom of which lie the remains of the Bait, at the foot of a limestone wall. The Bait is therefore both the destination of a short detour and a historical point of reference in a precisely described landscape setting. This brings the history of the place into view alongside the route to the summit.
Nature and regional context
Chamois, rock partridges and various protected flower species are often encountered on a section of the trail at an altitude of about 1,900 m. Sightings are not guaranteed. If you look out for these species, it is best to think of them as possible encounters along this section rather than a fixed part of every hike.
The area around Cimone has a long-standing and renowned tradition of artisanal woodworking. At the regional level, the SP 25 di Garniga runs from Aldeno and the Adige Valley to Piana delle Viote, passing through Cimone and Garniga. The Riserva Naturale Integrale delle Tre Cime di Monte Bondone encompasses Cornetto, Doss d'Abramo and Cima Verde in the Monte Bondone massif. Cima Verde and Doss d'Abramo also feature on the route: the trail leads to the summit of Cima Verde and to Sella NE Doss d'Abramo. This lets you view the individual hike within the region's wider landscape and cultural context.
