Daiano: Church Art, Landscapes and Speck Tradition
Accommodation in Daiano
If you’re looking for hotels in Daiano, the town’s profile can help inform your travel decision: its highlights include religious art and historic architecture, trails with views of the Lagorai range, and a strong connection to speck production. These themes offer different points of interest. You can therefore consider whether village history, landscapes, or local cuisine should be your main priorities when choosing a destination.
Church Art and the Townscape
The parish church of San Tomaso in Daiano was consecrated on 28 November 1193. Its construction combines Gothic and Baroque styles. Inside the church are frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries, including a replica of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. A large 16th-century fresco of Saint Christopher can be seen on the north façade. The bell tower of the Gothic church has an onion-shaped dome.
Religious frescoes also feature in the townscape beyond the parish church: they can be seen on Daiano’s oldest houses. Monolithic fountains adorn Daiano’s streets. Casa Romana, also known as “Castello,” is an imposing Gothic-style building. Church art and architecture are therefore found not only in a single building, but also on houses and at fountains throughout the town.
Architecture with Changing Uses
The Ex Colonia Pavese offers another perspective on Daiano’s architectural history. The building was constructed in the Rationalist style in the 1930s. Originally built as a sanatorium for respiratory diseases, it was later used during the Second World War as a factory for military optical instruments. This sequence links one building with two different historical functions and complements the religious themes with the history of its former medical and later military uses.
Trails, Landscapes and Getting There
Nature trails with views of the Lagorai range start in Daiano. The walking route “L’incanto dei prati e dei boschi di località Ganzaie” runs above Daiano through higher parts of the town and a beautiful larch forest to extensive green spaces. Daiano has the most hours of sunshine in Val di Fiemme. Views of the Lagorai range, forests, and green spaces are therefore among the town’s described landscape features.
Daiano lies on the road from Cavalese to Passo Lavazé. The town can also be reached from Cavalese by public transport. This transport information may change seasonally.
Speck and Traditional Cuisine
Daiano is a destination for food tourism thanks to its speck production. Maso dello Speck is an agriturismo serving traditional cuisine; the speck there is cured slowly for 10 to 12 months. The curing time is a specific aspect of the speck tradition, while the agriturismo represents the traditional cuisine. If you’re considering local cuisine when choosing a destination, these offer two different points of interest: speck production as a local tradition and a named dining option.
