Discover Centa San Nicolò
Accommodation in Centa San Nicolò
Centa San Nicolò lies on the western side of the Vigolana at an elevation of 833 m. Hiking trails, the Torrente Centa with its natural and historical traces, and the chestnut tradition offer different themes to consider when planning a trip. Your choice can therefore depend on whether you mainly want to spend time on the trails or are interested in water management and local history.
Hiking between forest and ridge
The SAT Trail 442 begins on the S.P. 349 della Fricca, near Bar Ristorante Sindech. From there, the wooded, steeply ascending route leads to Rifugio Casarota. The trail then continues to the ridge between Bècco di Filadonna and Terza Cima. The Rifugio thus serves as a wayfinding point between the ascent and the described continuation to the ridge.
From Frisanchi, the highest hamlet of the former municipality of Centa San Nicolò, a forest road leads to SAT Trail 444. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Another trail runs behind the Acropark through a spruce forest and is also accessible with a stroller. It is part of the road section between Centa San Nicolò and Caldonazzo.
In January 2026, Rifugio Paludei was described as a starting and rest point for hikes at lower elevations, walks and cycling routes, as well as more challenging excursions. The destinations mentioned include Rifugio Casarota, Monte Spilech, Becco di Filadonna and Bivacco “alla Madonnina,” with its distinctive rock spire. If your plans depend on meals or accommodation, check the current management arrangements at Rifugio Paludei.
Along the Torrente Centa: nature and hydropower
In the Parco fluviale del Torrente Centa, surfaced trails run along the stream. They are suitable for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding; check current trail conditions locally. The stream also forms small white-pebble beaches, and the Valimpach waterfall is nearby.
The park also preserves and makes accessible the structural remains of former mills and sawmills. The power of the Centa once drove their wheels. Along the trails, nature and traces of past water use come together, although they need not be part of the same outing: you can explore the stream or focus specifically on the history of its use.
Local history and architecture
A document from 1216 describes the early development of the settlement of Centa San Nicolò. The Prince-Bishop of Trento, Federico Vanga, granted Urico and Enrico from Bolzano the mountain between Folgaria and Centa. They were to establish farmsteads there and make the area fertile and settled. Centa is also said to have received a carta di regola as early as 1315.
More recent historical traces are also part of the area: Campregheri is home to small fortifications from the First World War. If you include them in your visit, check their condition locally. Bivacco Vigolana adds an architectural highlight: it was rebuilt in 2016 with an innovative design in the shape of an inverted truncated pyramid.
Chestnut traditions and a dated event
In Valle del Centa, growing chestnuts was a valuable and profitable activity for many years. One kilogram of chestnuts could be exchanged for one kilogram of flour. Around 800 fruit trees are recorded in the region. This tradition offers a distinct way to explore regional history alongside the hiking trails and traces of hydropower.
The Festa della Castagna della Valle del Centa is scheduled to take place in Centa San Nicolò on 24 and 25 October 2026. It is organised by Pro Loco Centa San Nicolò. Check the final programme for the event before travelling.
