Brentonico: Trails, Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Brentonico
Brentonico lies on a plateau between Monte Baldo, Monte Altissimo and Vignola, spanning elevations from around 500 to over 2,000 metres. From various spots near Brentonico, you can see Lake Garda, the Pre-Alps peaks and the plain. When planning your trip, you can consider nature, trails and culture as distinct focal points: each offers a different perspective on the area and its surroundings.
Plateau and Habitats
The Monte Baldo di Brentonico nature reserve includes extensive beech forests, alpine meadows, subalpine shrub communities and rocky habitats. This variety of habitat types makes nature an important consideration for anyone thinking of visiting Brentonico. A botanical highlight is the permanent Orto dei semplici and Giardino botanico del Monte Baldo, a complex covering around 6,000 square metres. Together, the nature reserve and garden offer two different perspectives on the area’s plant life and habitats.
The Oasi dei Sensi is also located in the heart of Brentonico. It invites you to experience the garden anew through touch, smell and hearing. This multisensory approach draws attention to individual sensory impressions; by contrast, a panoramic trail from Mori to Brentonico passes through forests, meadows and open landscapes. If you want to shape your stay around different experiences of nature, you can choose between a garden focused on the senses and a route shaped by the landscape.
Trails and Cycling Climb
For cyclists, the climb from Mori to Brentonico is challenging but rewarding. It follows the Monte Baldo provincial road and offers several panoramic rest stops. Together with the trail through forests, meadows and open landscapes, this gives you a choice of two ways to get around: the trail passes through varied scenery, while the cycling route is described as a challenging climb with rest stops.
Winter at Centro Fondo San Giacomo
Centro Fondo San Giacomo is located on the Brentonico plateau. The centre has cross-country ski trails for both classic and skating techniques, as well as a footpath for walkers and a route suitable for snowshoeing. Winter operations are seasonal. Check the latest opening information for your travel dates if you would like to include these activities in your plans.
Fossils from the Monte Baldo Range
The Museo del Fossile del Monte Baldo displays fossils from the Monte Baldo range in 40 display cases across six rooms. The palaeontological collection documents groups of animals that lived in marine environments and evolved in succession after the Triassic over a period of around 150 to 180 million years. The fossils’ regional origins and the long evolution of these animal groups offer two different ways into the museum’s subject: the Monte Baldo range as their place of origin and marine environments as their habitat.
Church and Palazzo Eccheli Baisi
The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo preserves traces of medieval painted decoration on its vault. The apse features Romanesque frescoes attributed to artists from Verona and dating to the second half of the 14th century. These provide two art-historical points of interest in different parts of the church: the surviving painted decoration on the vault and the frescoes in the apse.
At Palazzo Eccheli Baisi, by contrast, the focus is on its architectural history. It was built at the end of the 16th century by combining several existing medieval buildings. While the church is distinguished by its artwork on the vault and in the apse, the palazzo’s history links medieval predecessor buildings with a later structure. In Brentonico, you can explore nature, outdoor activities and culture through specific places and their distinctive features.
