Racines offers a variety of options for a stay: cross-country skiing on a high-altitude trail, views across the Ridnaun Alpine Pasture World, a challenging high-alpine hike, and nature and culture themes surrounding Wolfsthurn Castle. If you are looking for a hotel in Racines, considering which of these experiences will shape your trip can help narrow down your options. In addition to your preferred focus, seasonal dates and current trail conditions also play a role in planning.

High-altitude trail, views and a high-alpine hike

The “Panorama Höhenloipe Platschjoch” is located at an altitude of 1,800 metres and covers 14.9 kilometres of cross-country ski trail through varied open terrain and dense spruce forests. Its altitude and length indicate the scale of the route; the landscape of open terrain and forest shapes its character. Grooming and seasonal availability may vary. If cross-country skiing is important to your stay, check these details before making plans.

The panoramic viewing platform at Fuchssee offers 360-degree views from the heart of the Ridnaun Alpine Pasture World. You can reach the platform on bus route 312 from Sterzing to the “Gasse” stop.

The “Seven Lakes Tour” offers a different kind of nature experience: a challenging hike in the Ridnaun high mountains to glacial lakes. It is offered as a guided visitor programme; seasonal dates may change. Unlike the panoramic viewing platform, this is not just about a viewpoint, but a hike with an expressly stated level of difficulty and destination. Check the dates before your trip if you want the guided tour to have a fixed place in your stay.

Gilfenklamm Gorge: check current access conditions

Access to Gilfenklamm Gorge is specifically restricted: following a rockfall on 22 August 2026, it is currently accessible only from the entrance in Jaufensteg. The regular route can be walked only downhill and approximately halfway; wooden walkways and bridges lead towards the waterfall. Do not plan to walk the full regular route. Check trail conditions before travelling, as both the direction and the accessible section are restricted.

Wolfsthurn Castle and cultural themes

Wolfsthurn Castle has been home to the South Tyrolean Museum of Hunting and Fishing since 1996. The museum features furnished state rooms and a cultural-historical collection on the history of hunting and fishing. The rooms’ furnishings and the history of these subjects are presented side by side. For your trip, the castle offers a cultural focus that differs from the nature experiences of the high-altitude trail and the Ridnaun Alpine Pasture World.

A themed trail also leads to the castle. Interactive stations and information panels share facts about the “Forest and Water” habitats. Nature is therefore the focus along the trail, while the museum covers the history of hunting and fishing as well as the state rooms. The two offerings provide different points of interest around Wolfsthurn Castle.

A Krampus parade is one of the traditions in Racines. The exact dates vary from year to year; if you want to plan your trip around it, check the dates for that year before booking.
