Prad am Stilfserjoch combines nature and hiking with buildings and traditions closely connected to the village. The municipal area stretches from the edge of Stelvio National Park at an altitude of 900 metres to the Lichtenberg farms at 1,500 metres. One of its distinctive landscapes is the protected Prader Sand biotope: a natural alluvial area on the sandy river delta of the Suldenbach stream.

Prader Sand and Walking Trails

Three different hiking routes lead through the riparian landscape of Prader Sand to the Fischerseen lakes. The trails through the area are also suitable for families with pushchairs. This combines a distinctive landscape with a clearly named destination; the routes themselves offer different ways to cross the riparian landscape.

Another nature highlight is the four-kilometre Nittweg tree trail. It features 54 tree and shrub species from the damp valleys of Nörderberg and the dry Sonnenberg. The comparison between these two areas of origin makes the trail an option for anyone with a particular interest in trees and shrubs and different growing conditions.

The hiking trails also differ in their described features. The Gumperle Trail is a two-kilometre circular route that starts below St. George’s Church in Agums. Before setting out, check local trail conditions, as they can change. The Lottersteig follows a well-maintained network of paths through meadows and forests above Prad am Stilfserjoch. It offers views of the village and the upper and lower Vinschgau. For this hike, too, it is advisable to check trail conditions locally.

The Archaikweg circular trail leads from Prad towards Agums and the upper bridge over the Suldenbach, where the entrance to Trail No. 11 is located. It also follows sections of a historic Alpine crossing route and passes the prehistoric settlement of “Gaschlin”. This tour therefore focuses both on the route itself and on the historical traces along the way.

Churches, Chapels and Historical Traces

In Agums, St. George’s Church, the cemetery chapel and the cemetery form an ensemble. Its elevated location makes it a popular panoramic viewpoint for many hikers. The grave of botanist Hermann Müller lies in the churchyard of St. John’s Church in Prad, and a marble plaque commemorates him.

Lichtenberg is home to buildings with different histories: the parish church features structural elements and frescoes dating from the 13th century. St. Christina’s Chapel dates from 1575; it has a three-sided apse, murals and a shingle roof. A few frescoes have been preserved in the chapel of Lichtenberg Castle ruins; they were restored in 2006. The church building, chapel architecture and surviving murals each offer their own historical perspective.

Traditions Throughout the Year

One of the area’s distinctive local traditions is the Zusslrennen, an old custom practised only in Prad to drive out winter. The carnival procession is also a noisy ritual: young men wear white robes decorated with colourful paper flowers and cowbells that often weigh more than 20 kilograms.

Another carnival tradition is the customary Maschgertanz. Masked couples go from one inn to another, dancing according to set rituals. Unlike these carnival traditions, the Sacred Heart fires are tied to a date after Pentecost: every year, on the third Sunday after Pentecost, they are lit on the mountain ridges above Prad am Stilfserjoch. As the date depends on Easter, it does not fall on the same calendar date every year.

More Activities and Getting There

For cyclists, the Stelvio Tour from Prad covers 25 kilometres, around 1,800 metres of elevation gain and 48 hairpin bends in total. Trail conditions and access to the pass can change seasonally; check both before setting out. To reach the aquaprad visitor centre, take the Vinschger Bahn train to Spondinig or Mals, then continue on bus route 271 or by shuttle bus. As public transport connections can change, it is advisable to check before travelling.
