Solda: High mountains, hiking trails and culture
Accommodation in Solda
Solda is a high-alpine mountain village at about 1,900 meters above sea level. Choosing a hotel in Solda therefore sensibly begins with the question of which aspects of the area you want to shape your stay: hiking areas, specific trails, winter activities or culture. The destinations below show how varied these priorities can be. This makes it possible to plan your trip around a loop in the valley floor, a hike in the high mountains or a museum devoted to a clearly defined subject.
Hiking between the valley floor and the high mountains
Solda is one of the gateways to the hiking areas of Stelvio National Park. About 115 kilometers of hiking trails stretch around the high-alpine resort village. This figure refers to the trail network, not to a single hike. For your own planning, the specific route is therefore what matters; route conditions and classifications can change. Check the information for your route before setting out.
The Sulden Glacier Trail runs at the foot of the Königspitze, Zebrù and Ortler. Its route can thus be identified by reference to three specific mountains. The hike over the Madritschjoch offers a different perspective: it connects the Martell Valley with Solda and passes through impressive high-mountain landscapes in Stelvio National Park. The description of the Glacier Trail focuses on its route and the three mountains; for the Madritschjoch, the connection between the Martell Valley and Solda and the national park landscape are the central reference points. Check mountain conditions and transportation arrangements before setting out on the Madritschjoch hike.
The Sulden Culture Promenade is an approximately seven-kilometer loop on the valley floor of Solda. The approximate distance refers to the entire loop; its location in the valley is also explicitly described. Its loop format and valley-floor setting distinguish it from the high-mountain settings of the other two hikes. When planning, the route’s shape and course through the valley are therefore the main considerations.
Culture and history in Solda
MMM Ortles is an underground museum in Solda at the foot of the Ortler and is devoted to ice. It also houses the world’s largest collection of paintings of the Ortler region. Ice and art from the Ortler region thus offer two specific perspectives on the museum: a thematic focus and a collection with a regional connection.
The Old Parish Church of Sulden was built in the 14th century; its present form dates from the 16th century. The two dates mark different phases in the building’s history: its construction and the form that defines it today. Together with the ice and art theme of MMM Ortles, the church adds a historical perspective on Solda.
Winter activities
Winter activities in Solda include winter hiking and snowshoeing; ice climbing is also available. This offers two types of hiking and another winter activity as distinct options. Check the current program for winter hikes and snowshoe tours before your trip. Conditions and availability for ice climbing can change; take these factors into account when preparing.
