Cornino: Coastal Paths, Nature and History
Accommodation in Cornino
When comparing Cornino as a base for your stay, specific features of the area can help you decide: the coastal landscape, walking routes and cultural destinations each offer a different focus. Key points of interest include the Baia di Cornino, the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve and places in the surrounding area. This lets you match your hotel search to your travel interests.
Coast and Nature
The Monte Cofano Nature Reserve protects an impressive coastal promontory of exceptional scenic and natural value. Its cliffs provide a habitat for Bonelli’s eagle, the peregrine falcon and the raven. The promontory’s distinctive shape is complemented by its particular natural significance. If you are considering scenery and nature when planning your stay, Monte Cofano is a clear point of reference for both.
The Baia di Cornino is the ancient seafaring village of Custonaci. Within the bay lies Cala Bukuto, also known as Cala Buguto: a picturesque cove and the area’s largest sandy coastal stretch. The names refer to different features of the area: the Baia is the seafaring village, while Cala Bukuto, or Buguto, is the cove within the Baia. This makes it easier to distinguish the maritime character of the village from this distinctive stretch of coast.
Three Routes with Different Courses
The Sentiero Italia CAI MTB includes an approximately four-kilometre coastal loop around Monte Cofano and continues as far as the Baia di Cornino. The approximate distance refers to the loop; the continuation to the Baia is a further point of reference along the route described.
The Sentiero del mare starts in Borgo Cornino, passes the Torre di San Giovanni and the Cappella del Crocefisso, and continues to the Torre della Tonnara di Cofano. This sequence of named places gives the route its own character and helps distinguish it from the paths around Monte Cofano or the route to Baglio Cofano.
The walking trail to Baglio Cofano starts in Cornino and is of moderate difficulty. The descriptions provide different criteria for choosing a route: the approximate length of the coastal loop, the notable waypoints on the Sentiero del mare and the stated difficulty of the path to Baglio Cofano. This lets you compare routes according to the information that matters most for your plans.

Rural History and Special Places
Near Cornino, Baglio Cofano was established in the 17th century as a small rural settlement. The Grotta Mangiapane, designed as an open-air museum, is also nearby. The village houses display rooms and facilities that recreate traditional rural life in Sicily. The two places offer different historical perspectives: Baglio Cofano represents the creation of a rural settlement, while the Grotta Mangiapane presents traditional rural life. As visiting conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before planning a visit.
The “Stella Maris” statue is also located near Cornino, 13 metres underwater in the waters off the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve. It is an underwater cultural attraction and therefore a distinctive feature of the area. Diving access and conditions may change; check them before planning a dive.
