Lentini: History and Nature
Accommodation in Lentini
Lentini offers several distinct points of interest to help you choose a destination: a medieval fortress, churches with their own architectural and historical traditions, historical collections, and the Biviere e Lago di Lentini nature reserve. If you are looking for a hotel in Lentini, you might first consider whether you would like to focus your stay on architectural and religious history, written collections, or nature.
Architectural history and religious traditions
The Castellaccio, also known as Castrum Vetus, is a medieval fortress on Colle Tirone that once protected the town of Lentini. The Santuario dei Tre Santi was built over a well in the early years of the 19th century. According to tradition, the martyrdom of Lentini’s three patron saints took place at this well. The Chiesa Madre Santa Maria la Cava e Sant'Alfio was built in its present form between 1700 and 1750. The timeline spans a medieval fortress, the church complex dating from 1700 to 1750, and the sanctuary from the early years of the 19th century.
Carcere dei Tre Santi and the hills of Leontinoi
The Carcere dei Tre Santi, also known as Grotta di Re Tertullo, is a well-preserved example of a prison reused during the Hohenstaufen period. The adjoining hypogea served as burial places for many martyrs. During the patron saint celebrations, the reliquary bust of San Cirino, which contains the heart of Sant'Alfio, is carried on the shoulders in a procession through the Carcere. Here, the former use as a prison and religious remembrance converge; the adjoining hypogea add a burial function to this context.
The hills of Leontinoi contain archaeological evidence documenting the area’s history from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. The hills lie within the present-day municipalities of Lentini and Carlentini. Thus, the archaeological perspective encompasses both municipalities and extends much further back in time than the architectural history of Lentini’s individual churches and fortress.
Library and Historical Archive
The Riccardo da Lentini Municipal Library provides on-site access to books, official gazettes, newspapers, and magazines covering a range of subjects. The Historical Archive of Lentini makes its catalogued and inventoried documents available to the public for consultation. It comprises eleven collections of documents relating to the history of the town of Lentini. The two institutions offer different ways to access written material: the library provides publications across a range of subjects for consultation, while the archive organizes historical documents into its collections. If you are interested in Lentini’s history, you can therefore choose between broader reading and archival collections documenting the town’s history.
Nature reserve and practical information
Biviere e Lago di Lentini is once again an important nature oasis. It is a stopover for migratory birds and a breeding ground for many other species. Access to the area is permitted only with the appropriate authorization; take this requirement into account when planning a visit. Biviere can be seen from trains on the Catania–Siracusa railway line between Lentini Diramazione and Lentini stations.
