Santa Flavia combines a maritime character with the ancient history of Solunto, which lies east of Palermo near the town. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, historic sites, buildings and the sea can offer different ways to shape your stay.

Solunto: History and Urban Layout

The archaeological site of Solunto includes the Hellenistic-Roman settlement, which was refounded on nearby Monte Catalfano after the destruction of the earlier coastal centre. When the Greeks arrived in Sicily, Solunto was one of the three centres where the Phoenicians settled. Two phases are important for understanding its chronology: the Phoenician settlement at the time of the Greeks’ arrival and the Hellenistic-Roman refounding after the destruction of the earlier coastal centre.

A defining feature is the regular Hippodamian urban layout. Three axes run from north to south; eight streets cross them at right angles from east to west. The grid illustrates the settlement’s orderly design, shaped by main axes and cross streets. The Antiquarium di Solunto is located at Via Collegio Romano, 90017 Santa Flavia (PA).

The archaeological site also includes the necropolis of Solunto. It extends through Contrada Campofranco, north of the archaic settlement; part of it lies on the edge of Santa Flavia’s built-up area.

Architecture from Different Periods

Santa Flavia’s architecture also reflects a range of styles. Villa Filangeri houses frescoes in the Liberty style. The Basilica Soluntina is an example of late Sicilian Baroque. Villa Valdina was built around a 16th-century tower and preserves works by Novelli.

Near the ancient port of Solunto are a 12th-century Rocca and a Gothic castle belonging to the Princes of San Vincenzo. These buildings add other periods and architectural forms to the area’s archaeological history.

Maritime Character and Neighbourhoods

Santa Flavia is a small seaside village with a pronounced seafaring character. Sant’Elia is a neighbourhood of Santa Flavia, a few kilometres from Palermo, and is also a small seaside village. Its colourful houses cluster around the bay of the same name.

The celebration of Madonna del Lume in Santa Flavia traditionally includes a procession by sea towards Capo Zafferano. If you are planning your trip around the celebration, check the date in advance. Secca della Formica can be reached by boat.

Which perspective suits your trip?

Two different ways to explore the area come together in your travel planning: Solunto reveals its ancient urban layout, while Santa Flavia and Sant’Elia showcase the area’s maritime character. The villas, religious buildings and traces of the port add architecture from different periods to these perspectives. If you are looking for a hotel, this focus can help you choose Santa Flavia as a destination that matches your interests.
