Polizzi Generosa: Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Polizzi Generosa
When looking for hotels in Polizzi Generosa, you can include nature trails, historic sites and local festival dates in your travel plans. The municipal area lies within the Parco delle Madonie, established in 1989, an area of exceptional scientific, natural and geological value. Nature and cultural heritage offer different ways to shape your stay.
Nature Trails and the Madonie Mountains
The Vallone Madonna degli Angeli near Polizzi Generosa is home to 25 specimens of Abies nebrodensis preserved in their original habitat. The Sentiero Abies nebrodensis passes through mixed woodland to the Anfiteatro di Quacella. Topics along the trail include plants endemic to the Madonie Mountains and the population of Abies nebrodensis in protected areas of Polizzi Generosa.
The Sentiero dell’aquila reale is an easy trail through the prairie of Piano Farina to the canyon of Fosso Canna, designated as a nesting site. Numerous nature trails in the municipal area can be explored on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. The Festa della Neve offers another opportunity for activities in the Madonie Mountains: it takes place every year on the third Sunday in July and includes an ascent to the high peaks. When planning your trip, you can consider two different outdoor activities: the easy Sentiero dell’aquila reale and the ascent to the high peaks as part of the Festa della Neve.
Churches, Palaces and Collections
A walk through the historic centre takes you past well-preserved corners, squares, lanes and neighbourhoods. The Chiesa Madre is the town’s main church and dates back to Norman times. The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie, also known as Badia Nuova, was built in 1499 and completely rebuilt in the 18th century. It houses a gilded wooden custodia, considered the largest sacred custodia in Sicily. Pietro Bencivinni created it in the 17th century in the style of Spanish altarpieces.
The Palazzo Gagliardo brings together architectural history and design: the La Farina family had it built in the 16th century, and it retains a Mannerist style typical of eastern Sicily. Its Mannerist portal, with carved masks and floral or animal motifs, is on Via Carlo V. The Palazzo Carpinello features a monumental staircase leading from Via Garibaldi. It is decorated with majolica vases depicting figures from the history of Polizzi.
The Gothic stone portal of the Chiesa del Santo Spirito can be seen from the square of the same name. Only the church ruins are open to the public; they now house an unusual playground. The Chiesa di San Gandolfo la Povera and the Collegio di Maria were built in 1622 to accommodate the Brotherhood of San Gandolfo. They also contain a 1620 painting by Giuseppe Salerno depicting the patronage of Saint Gandolfo.
The Civico Museo Archeologico Amedeo Tullio focuses on finds from the 2nd to 4th centuries BC, discovered in a Hellenistic necropolis above Polizzi Generosa. The collection includes terracotta figurines, bronze objects, terracotta lamps and ceramic amphorae in the style of Magna Graecia. The Museo Etnoantropologico has a permanent collection of historical objects, tools and everyday items, displayed in reconstructed work and living spaces. The MAN_Museo Abiens Nebrodensis offers an immersive sensory exhibition across five thematic areas.
A visit to the Palazzo della Cultura includes part of the historic Biblioteca Duca Lancia di Brolo, with 40,000 volumes, including early incunabula, 16th- and 17th-century books and numerous manuscripts. At the Casa Fondazione Giuseppe Antonio Borgese, visitors can explore an archive containing various editions of his works, first editions in foreign languages, manuscripts, correspondence, rare postcards and photographs. The house stands on the ruins of a 15th-century Dominican monastery.
Polizzi Generosa is considered the oldest ceramic production centre in the Madonie Mountains. A former brickworks has been converted into an artistic ceramics workshop where young women work as decorators. The “Delizie nobiliari” experience combines a visit to a palace with a tasting of local food. If you plan to take part in the “Delizie nobiliari” experience, check its current availability in advance.
Festivals and Local Traditions
The Sagra delle nocciole takes place in the second half of August and re-enacts scenes from rural and village life; the specific event dates may vary. The Festa del Santissimo Crocifisso is celebrated every year from 1 to 4 May. It includes processions through the cobbled streets of Polizzi Generosa.
The Festa di San Gandolfo takes place every year on the third Sunday in September and includes traditional music, concerts and a fireworks display. On the occasion of the celebrations, the full “Sulle tracce di San Gandolfo” route can also be completed on the third weekend of September. If you plan to do the route during your visit, check in advance whether it will be taking place then.
The Festa di Santa Lucia takes place on 12 and 13 December. Traditionally, Cuccìa is prepared on the eve of the festival: a soup made with wheat, chickpeas and dried Badda beans, which are typical of the Polizzi area. When planning your trip, consider local customs and their associated foods as well as the churches and festival dates.
