Castellana Sicula: Trails and Cultural Heritage in the Parco delle Madonie
Accommodation in Castellana Sicula
Castellana Sicula lies within the Parco delle Madonie. The G7 geological trail, “Le pietre e l’acqua,” combines natural features with traces of human activity; Trail 553 leads to a 15th-century sanctuary. Archaeological remains take center stage in Contrada Muratore, while murals, churches, and local food round out the area’s cultural profile. If you’re looking for a hotel in Castellana Sicula, these different highlights can help you choose a destination that matches your interests.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
Numerous trails for a range of activities start from the developed area of Piano Mulino. An old, disused watermill stands near the mountain spring. In the Castellana Sicula area, the G7 runs from Mulino Petrolito to Cozzo Morto. It is 2.228 kilometers long and rated E for difficulty. Allow different amounts of time for each direction: the route to the destination takes about two hours, and the return takes one hour.
Trail 553 also takes in a variety of landscapes, alternating between stretches through Mediterranean vegetation and sweeping views of the valley of the Imera Meridionale. This challenging hike starts in Borgata Nociazzi, near Castellana Sicula, and leads to the Santuario Madonna dell’Alto. The religious building dates back to the 15th century.
The MTB3 describes another route: it runs from Castellana Sicula through the hamlet of Nociazzi to a developed area above Mulino Petrolito. The trail passes through a beech forest to Fontana Madonna dell’Alto, then continues with a final ascent to the Santuario Madonna dell’Alto, at an elevation of 1,827 meters. Alongside hiking trails, the route also offers the landscape highlights of a cycling route.
Tufo Gipsi is particularly suitable for educational outings focused on natural history. The Carcare there are structures once used for the artisanal processing of gypsum. They add a historical aspect of local work to the area’s geological themes.
Archaeology in Contrada Muratore
The Museo Civico is located within the archaeological site of Contrada Muratore and has both an ethnographic and an archaeological section. The archaeological section displays finds from excavations at Muratore, as well as other finds from surface surveys at Cozzo del Morto, Cozzo Zara, Monte Rotola Vecchia, and Cozzo Re. They illustrate prehistoric human settlement at these sites.
The Muratore site includes a multi-lobed thermal complex. Adjacent rooms are arranged around a small courtyard; the site also features a finely paved floor and a well-preserved ambulatory. Measuring 19 Ă— 20 meters, the building is one of the few Roman-era examples excavated in Sicily to date. The site also includes a necropolis with three hypogea carved entirely into the rock. Excavations also uncovered the residential area and public area of a probable pagus from the Roman imperial period.
Other archaeological remains date back much further: Grotta del Vecchiuzzo served as a multi-family dwelling from the 3rd millennium through the first centuries of the 2nd millennium. At Cozzo Moro, at an elevation of 1,165 meters, there are remains of pre-Roman burial tombs for inhumation.
Murals, Churches, and Local Traditions
The colorful contemporary murals have earned Castellana Sicula the nickname “Città dei Murales.” In Calcarelli, a hamlet of Castellana Sicula, the Chiesa di San Giuseppe stands out for its old pipe organ, which is still used during church services. The church’s ceiling and walls are painted.
At the “Manciari di San Giuseppi” on March 19, communal tables are set with local, traditional dishes. These include pasta with beans, cod, fried cardoons, and sfinge, sugar-coated doughnuts. Locally made artisanal foods also include bread, bitter almond amaretti, cheesecake, and oven-baked cassata.
Traditional crafts are also varied: they include baskets and panniers made from willow branches and strips of reed, as well as saddles, bisaccia bags, crochet work, and lace embroidery. For a different activity, the “Centro Addestramenti Sicilia - Sport Equestri” offers riding lessons for all ages and skill levels, from recreational riding to professional equestrian sports.
