Casteltermini brings together an archaeological collection and a historic town center, set at the foot of Monte Pecoraro. If you decide before booking which of these highlights will shape your trip, you can choose your destination to match your planned interests.

Archaeological Evidence in Casteltermini

The first room of the “Di Pisa Guardì” Antiquarium houses a large archaeological section. The antiquarium also displays a selection of works by Michele Caltagirone, known as Quarantino, the historian Gaetano Di Giovanni, and the distinguished educator Giovanni Agostino De Cosmi. The oldest archaeological evidence represented there comes from Monte Roveto and dates back to the Early Neolithic. The antiquarium also displays Attic pottery from the 5th century BC, which is considered exceptionally high-quality. The pieces mentioned therefore offer different chronological reference points within the collection.

The antiquarium is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; it is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Check the opening hours again before you arrive. Another archaeological trace can be found at the Santa Croce-Fontana di Paolo site, where three large cisterns containing material from the 6th to 5th centuries BC were excavated. This dating distinguishes these finds from the oldest evidence represented in the antiquarium, which dates back to the Early Neolithic. Here, you can encounter two different archaeological perspectives: a collection and an excavation site.

Founding and Historic Town Center

Baron Gian Vincenzo Maria Termini e Ferreri founded Casteltermini on April 5, 1629, on the Chiuddia fief. A large square with the founder’s palace and a long street shaped the historic center. Numerous homes, aristocratic residences and churches were built in this area. The founding date and townscape thus provide different points of reference for exploring Casteltermini’s history.

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe stands at the end of Corso Umberto I, at the top of a flight of steps. Its precise location adds a specifically named religious building to the description of the center. Together with the square, the founder’s palace and the residences, it gives a picture that takes into account both individual buildings and the development of the town center.

Mountain Landscapes and Industrial Archaeology

Casteltermini lies at the foot of Monte Pecoraro, which rises to 753 meters above sea level. The Eremo di Santa Croce is about three kilometers from the town center, amid the green mountain landscapes of the province of Agrigento. These details offer two different points of reference: the town’s location at the foot of the mountain and the approximate distance from the center to a specific destination.

The Cozzo Disi mine lies near Casteltermini, between Casteltermini and Campofranco, on State Road 189 in the Platani Valley. The Cozzo Disi Mining Museum was established under Sicilian Regional Law No. 17 of May 15, 1991, and is a noteworthy example of industrial archaeology. This adds an industrial archaeology connection to the archaeological and historical themes. If you would like to visit the mining museum, check locally in advance to confirm current access arrangements.

Travel Information and Hotel Search

Acquaviva Casteltermini railway station is eight kilometers from Casteltermini. Agrigento and Palermo can be reached from Casteltermini via State Road 189. For your journey, these details provide different points of reference: the distance to the named station and the road connection to the two cities. When comparing hotel options, focus your search on what you most want to do in Casteltermini; its cultural and landscape attractions offer concrete points of reference.
