Terralba’s cultural and historical attractions include the Cattedrale San Pietro Apostolo, several museums and traces of early settlement. Marceddì adds the Museo del Mare and the tradition of the Sagra della Madonna di Bonaria to these attractions. The different areas of interest can help guide your travel plans, from architectural and art history to rural collections and archaeology.

Cathedral history and works of art

The Cattedrale San Pietro Apostolo was rebuilt in late Baroque style from 1821, on the site of an older Romanesque church. This predecessor dated from 1144 and had been commissioned by Mariano I. The building’s history thus links a 12th-century Romanesque church with its later reconstruction in the late Baroque style.

The cathedral houses capitals from Neapolis, the ancient Phoenician-Punic city, a baptismal font dating from 1626, a 17th-century wooden pulpit and a Spanish silver cross. The capitals were salvaged when the apse of the former cathedral was demolished. The entrance and car park of the Cattedrale San Pietro Apostolo are wheelchair accessible.

Museums of archaeology, daily life and work

The Museo Pinacoteca Eliseo opened on 14 November 2004 and spans three floors. One room displays archaeological finds dating from the Neolithic to the Roman imperial period. The collection also includes furniture, works of art, old texts and paintings by Italian, Sardinian and Russian artists. The exhibitions trace the history of Terralba and beyond. Archaeological finds are displayed alongside art and written records.

The Museo del Contadino is the Casa Museo of Signor Giuseppe Ranieri in the Funtanedda district. Inside and outside, it displays everyday objects that are no longer in use, as well as agricultural items and tools. The museum preserves the memory of the vanished farming community. Unlike the Pinacoteca, whose collection also includes archaeological finds and paintings, this museum focuses on objects from everyday life and agriculture.

The Museo della Borraccia e del Ciclismo is divided into two rooms. They display numerous water bottles and other objects that tell the story of cycling races, team work and sports journalism. Su Magasiu de Akraxiu offers another perspective on agriculture and livestock farming. The museum is housed in a restored historic building; pictures and tools illustrate the annual cycle of agricultural and pastoral activities. Each museum therefore covers a distinct aspect: rural daily life, cycling or the yearly cycle of agricultural work.

Early settlement and archaeological traces

The San Ciriaco archaeological site in the Terralba area gave its name to the regional San Ciriaco culture. It developed during the Middle Neolithic, in the 5th millennium BC. The Terralba area also includes the Nuragic villages of Pomata and Coddu su Fennugu. These places have different archaeological associations: San Ciriaco is linked to the Middle Neolithic, while Pomata and Coddu su Fennugu are Nuragic villages in the area.

The Museo del Mare - Marceddì is located by an ancient port that has existed since the Neolithic. Archaeological excavations date human presence at this site to around 8,000 years ago. This timeline extends from the earliest traces of human settlement to later archaeological themes, which also feature in Terralba’s collections.

Marceddì: cultural heritage, birdlife and tradition

The Corru S’Ittiri SIC area is located in the Borgata di Marceddì. Rare species such as the purple heron, marsh harrier, greater flamingo and purple swamphen breed in the Terralba area. The Museo del Mare - Marceddì organises exhibitions and themed workshops on local cultural heritage, guided walks along unspoilt paths to archaeological ruins, and photography workshops focused on the birdlife of the protected natural area. The activities cover different topics: the walks lead to archaeological ruins, while the photography workshops focus on birdlife. If you would like to take part in a workshop or guided walk, check the dates in advance.

Another cultural tradition in Marceddì is the annual Sagra della Madonna di Bonaria, first held in August 1924. It includes a mass, a procession through the village and a traditional procession at sea. The procession at sea gives the tradition a distinct maritime connection, alongside the procession through the village.
