Serdiana brings together Romanesque religious architecture, a typical courtyard house in the town centre, and nature and festival traditions shaped by the seasons. This gives you a range of interests to consider when planning your trip: architectural history, winter bird stopovers at the salt pond, or religious celebrations held on different dates. The buildings also make distinct impressions in their settings—from a church in gently rolling countryside to a courtyard house in the heart of the town.

Santa Maria di Sibiola: Romanesque architecture

About 3 km from Serdiana, the ancient church of Santa Maria di Sibiola stands among olive groves in gently rolling countryside. It is considered one of the masterpieces of Sardinia’s Romanesque art. It was built by Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Saint Victor of Marseille between the late 11th and early 12th centuries. The church has two naves of different sizes, each with its own entrance and semicircular apse. An apse is the semicircular end of a church space; at Santa Maria di Sibiola, each nave has its own. Wide arches supported by cruciform pillars separate the naves. If you are interested in Romanesque architecture, you can appreciate the setting among the olive groves and the layout of the church interior as two different aspects of the same building.

Houses and churches in Serdiana

In the centre of Serdiana is Casa Mura Sebastiano, a typical courtyard house and ethnographic museum. Its location in town differs from that of Santa Maria di Sibiola, about 3 km away in gently rolling countryside. A chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua is in the east wing of Castello Roberti, beside the tower; it currently belongs to the Angius sisters. The parish church of SS. Salvatore is easy to reach from the town centre and is accessible to people with disabilities.

Winter birds at the salt pond

The small salt pond Su Stani saliu is a seasonal natural highlight: in winter, black-winged stilts and pink flamingos stop there to rest.

Festival traditions throughout the year

Serdiana’s festival traditions take place across several months. In mid-May, the patron saint’s festival is celebrated with religious rites and performances; in early September, particularly important celebrations honour Santa Maria and San Raffaele. In November, the festivities include liturgies, favata and tastings of young wines. If a celebration is the reason for your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.

Planning priorities for your trip

When choosing your travel dates, there is a clear comparison to make: bird stopovers are a winter feature, while the festivals take place in mid-May, early September and November. If architectural history is your main interest, you can focus on the different types of buildings: the Romanesque church with its two naves and separate apses, or the typical courtyard house in the centre. This way, you can consider nature watching, festival traditions and architecture as different focuses for your trip to Serdiana.
