Domus De Maria: Archaeology, Coast and Nature
Accommodation in Domus De Maria
If you’re looking for a hotel in Domus De Maria, it helps to consider the different interests the area appeals to: Bithia and Torre di Chia offer historical attractions, the marine protected area offers a coastal setting, and the wooded mountains are ideal for walking excursions. This will help you decide before booking which focus you’d like to shape your stay.
Bithia and the History of Torre di Chia
The archaeological site of Bithia lies above and at the foot of the Torre di Chia headland. The settlement was founded around 720 BC.
Ancient Bithia also included the sacred Tophet. It was established on the islet of Su Cardolinu, east of the acropolis and near the mouth of the river harbor, in the last years of the 7th century BC. This provides two points of reference for understanding the site’s history: the approximate founding of the settlement and the later establishment of the Tophet.
Torre di Chia is part of a complex of Spanish coastal towers dating from the 17th century. It was built in 1578 at the behest of Viceroy De Moncada and served to defend the mouth of the Rio di Chia. The tower was scheduled to open to the public daily from August 1, 2026. Before your trip, check whether this arrangement is still in effect.
The climb to the Torre di Chia headland is recommended only for people in good physical condition. Take this limitation into account when planning if the tower is one of your travel interests.
Coast and Marine Protected Area
The Area Marina Protetta Capo Spartivento marine protected area covers more than 3,700 hectares of sea and ten kilometers of protected coastline. Su Giudeu is a beach in Domus de Maria. Secca di Bithia is designated as a diving route or dive site within the marine protected area. The coast offers a range of experiences, from the beach to diving.
Mountain Scenery, Wildlife and Festa del Fico
Walking excursions are possible in the wooded mountain areas of Domus de Maria. A forest area serves as a wildlife refuge for Sardinian deer and fallow deer. Alongside coastal attractions, the area also offers opportunities to explore the mountains and observe wildlife.
At the 14th edition of Festa del Fico, figs and products made from them were displayed, offered at a market, sold and sampled. The event adds a culinary dimension to the area’s history and scenery.
