Ceppo Morelli: Hiking and History
Accommodation in Ceppo Morelli
If you are planning a stay in Ceppo Morelli, you can choose between challenging high-altitude trails, routes to alpine pastures and waterfalls, and historic sites. The Itinerario B25 has separate time estimates for the ascent and descent; other trails lead to viewpoints, waterfalls and places associated with mining history.
Hiking Trails and Trip Planning
The Itinerario B25 starts in Ceppo Morelli at an altitude of 759 metres and ends at Passo del Laghetto at 2,472 metres. The ascent takes about five hours, and the descent about three hours and 20 minutes; the elevation gain is 1,713 metres. These times are estimates and depend on conditions and hikers’ abilities.
At the end, the B25 reaches the rocky ridge of Passo del Laghetto. This final section is considered technically challenging and is recommended for experienced hikers with good navigational skills and suitable equipment. Check local trail conditions and signage before setting out.
The route from Borgone to Alpe Laveggio takes about two hours and offers views of the Valle Anzasca and the Monte Rosa massif. It is described as an easy trail. The route from Mondelli to Alpe Cortenero also includes a short detour to the waterfalls on the Rio Mondelli.
The Sentiero dei Minatori starts in the hamlet of Campioli and leads to Crocette, also known as “Città Morta” (“Dead City”). Along the way, it passes places connected with the mining history of the upper Valle Anzasca. The recommended period for this route is June to October; check trail conditions before starting.
The approximately eight-kilometre Sentiero della salute “Luigi Corti” connects Ceppo Morelli with Vanzone con San Carlo and Bannio Anzino. The recommended period is May to October. It can also be used in winter with crampons or snowshoes. Compared with the recommended season for the Sentiero dei Minatori, this trail’s recommended period starts one month earlier.
Alpine Pastures, Religious Architecture and Mining History
Alpe Cortenero was built entirely from local stone. It stood abandoned for several years and was conservatively restored in 2004, preserving the original building techniques. The site therefore reflects local construction methods and a restoration with a clearly specified date.
The Santuario del Croppo, a historic religious building dedicated to the Virgin Mary, stands in the hamlet of Croppo. It was built in the second half of the 17th century, probably between about 1650 and 1670. The sanctuary and the sites associated with mining along the Sentiero dei Minatori offer different historical points of interest during your stay.
Winter and Getting There
The “Lucia Pizzi” cross-country ski trail is located in Località Case Sturi. Check current operating conditions locally before planning a visit. This lets you plan winter sports around the actual situation rather than relying solely on the trail’s existence.
You can also factor travel into your plans: a scheduled service from Domodossola stops at the Ceppo Morelli bus stop. If you intend to travel on this service, check the current timetable in advance. For hikes, the different time estimates and seasonal recommendations can help you tailor your stay to your chosen route.
