Villafranca Piemonte at a glance

  • The Cappella di Missione preserves frescoes dating from around 1430.
  • The Ochette Trail is an almost 13-kilometre loop along the Po River.
  • Local cycling routes run mostly along flat, paved, low-traffic side roads.
  • Marchierù Castle is in the hamlet of Soave and was first mentioned in a document in 1220.
  • The Giubileo del Cristo Risorto returns every 25 years.

Chapels and local history

The Cappella di Missione is considered evidence of early settlement, with roots reaching back to the Roman Christian period. Its fresco cycle dates from around 1430 and is largely attributed to Aimone Duce. This attribution should be understood as such, not as a confirmed signature on every individual painting. In the hamlet of San Giovanni, another church houses a fresco cycle dating from around 1540, largely attributed to Jacobino Longo. These are two different places and periods.

The Church of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie, also known as the Church of the Former Monastery, was founded in 1702. Its façade features Rococo and Neoclassical elements. Marchierù Castle is in Soave and is associated with the House of Savoy. A document from 1220 mentions donations of property to the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cavour. The castle’s historical mention and the possibility of visiting it today are separate questions; check current access rules.

Cycling and walking along the Po River

The signposted cycling routes run mostly along flat, paved, low-traffic side roads. This makes them an option to consider for an active day, but not every road is traffic-free. The Ochette Trail is an almost 13-kilometre loop along the Po River, with its official starting point at the Villafranca bridge. Its length and starting point can help you choose accommodation; check trail conditions, water levels and return time in advance.

A lowland forest along the Po River has a visitor area with facilities. A small woodland was restored near the Cappella di Missione, and spring-fed fountains were rediscovered. Davide Bertrand Park in Madonna Orti is under WWF protection. These places differ in location and protection status; a hotel in the main town is not necessarily close to all of them.

Festivals and choosing a hotel

The Sagra dei Pescatori is part of Settembre Villafranchese; the programme described includes traditional river fish dishes and a fireworks display with music along the Po. Check the current dates for a specific year. The Giubileo del Cristo Risorto is a centuries-old tradition held every 25 years. Its sculpture, made of wood and papier-mâché, was blessed in 1742. Here too, the historical schedule does not mean there is a celebration every year you travel.
