Sparone: Rocca, Frescoes and Crafts
Accommodation in Sparone
In Sparone, historical landmarks, material heritage related to crafts, and outdoor activities are distinct areas of interest. If you are considering the town as a destination for a stay, you can first decide whether you are more interested in history, traditional tools, or trails and outdoor activities. The themes range from a Rocca with historical associations to stretches of forest, alpine pastures, and challenging canyoning.
The Rocca and its history
The Rocca di Arduino, also known as the Rocca di Sparone, existed before the year 1000 and overlooks the road to the upper Orco Valley. It is mentioned as an Arduin possession in an imperial confiscation and donation charter issued by Otto. Another historical episode is associated with the year 1004: at that time, the Marquis of Ivrea and his army took refuge in the Rocca di Sparone. There, they successfully resisted the besieging army of Emperor Henry II of Germany. These two references tell of different moments: the Rocca existed before the year 1000, while the refuge during the siege is documented for 1004.
The Chiesa di Santa Croce adds architectural and art history to this historical perspective. According to A. Kingsley Porter, the church dates to around 1025. In the apse area, it has uncovered frescoes dated to the period from the late 14th to the early 15th century. Thus, at Santa Croce, the early date assigned to the church building and the later wall paintings represent two distinct periods.
Crafts and architectural features
La Fucina dei mestoli is an exhibition space dedicated to local material culture and traditional craftsmanship. It preserves an extensive collection of original tools and machines; some pieces date back to the 16th century. The focus is therefore on practical tools and their material history. This complements the view of the Rocca and church with objects that illustrate craft activities.
Medieval trilithic portals and striking, imposing herringbone-pattern stonework are still visible at the Casa forte di Pertia. The portals and the arrangement of the stones each give the building a distinctive architectural feature. Another historical trace lies near the route of the Roggia delle Fucine, also known as the Roggia del Mulino: several grain mills and several copper forges were already operating there from the 16th century onward. Together, these places show different aspects of local architectural and working history, without reducing them to the same period or the same type of craft.
Trails and outdoor activities
The route to Cima Arbella passes through chestnut, beech, and birch forest. Along the way, it first passes the Paramea alpine pasture and then the Magna Fioria alpine pasture. The sequence links different stretches of forest with two named alpine pastures.
The Vecchia mulattiera per Frachiamo also has a specific history. It starts in the Borgata Peretti and was built in 1872 by masons from Frachiamo with the help of their wives. This distinguishes it from the route to Cima Arbella: for the former, the starting point, year of construction, and people involved are specified, while the Cima Arbella route is characterized by its forest types and the sequence of alpine pastures.
Canyoning in Sparone offers a different kind of activity. It is a technical, vertical torrent activity in rocky gorges, with spectacular and challenging abseils along high waterfalls and steep walls. The Pista ciclabile is different: it features alternating descents and climbs and is suitable for a walk in green surroundings. These characteristics help distinguish the two options by their nature—challenging abseils on the one hand, and a walk amid greenery on the other.
