San Secondo Di Pinerolo: Park, History and Culture
Accommodation in San Secondo Di Pinerolo
San Secondo Di Pinerolo offers a range of attractions for a stay: the historic park of Castello Miradolo, the town’s architectural history and local traditions. The details below help put these highlights into context.
The historic park of Castello Miradolo
The historic park surrounds the castle and covers more than six hectares. It is home to more than 1,700 trees of historical and botanical significance. Irrigation canals and the proximity of the Torrente Chisone give the park ecological importance; it is a habitat for many animal species. The park’s landscape history and diverse collection of trees come together in its description.
The park’s original design dates from the last quarter of the 18th century. It included a pleasure garden, an orchard and a fishpond. The Sentiero del Sottobosco walking path offers a different focus, with flowers appearing in succession throughout the year. Ivy is particularly noticeable; in spring, periwinkle adds its small blue-violet flowers.
Among the park’s special areas is Il Bosco di Bambù, a grove of giant bamboo next to the Viale delle Ortensie and near the former park keeper’s house. The bamboo was probably introduced to reflect the 19th-century taste for exotic plants and botanical collecting in prominent gardens. La Serra also has its own history: it lies along the western façade of Castello Miradolo and features Neo-Gothic arcades. After years of deterioration, restoration in 2010 returned it to its original character.
Architectural history and local traditions
The ancient fountain is a landmark of San Secondo Di Pinerolo. The historic centre dates from the 18th century and preserves several architecturally significant residences. The parish church is a notable example of Piedmontese Baroque architecture; architect Giuseppe Girolamo Buniva built it in 1773. The Church of the Confraternity of the SS. Trinità also dates from the 18th century.
In Airali, the original settlement grew up around the small Church of San Giovanni Battista, which dates from the second half of the 17th century. Miradolo’s history goes back further: the castle, documented in the medieval period, controlled access to Val Chisone. The former fortress of Miradolo, known as Castello del Lupo, was destroyed at the end of the 16th century during fighting between French and Savoyard-Spanish troops.
Terracotta craftsmanship is also part of the town’s history. In the 19th century, San Secondo had 14 workshops that sold a variety of products throughout Piedmont. The carnival tradition includes the tupinè mask and the tupinera. These cultural references complement the town’s architectural history with its crafts and inherited local customs.
Cycle route and guided visits
The Anello ciclabile di San Secondo starts and ends in San Secondo and is 7.3 kilometres long. The route follows paved roads and is completely flat. This makes it easy to assess the distance and terrain before setting out. Check the route details before cycling.
Castello Miradolo hosts temporary exhibitions as well as educational and professional development activities. Guided visits to the park or exhibitions are available for individual visitors, groups, schools, families and day centres. They are led by experts and specialists. As availability and scheduling should be checked before travelling, it is advisable to enquire in advance.
Cultural events and weekly market
Piazza Europa has an amphitheatre-like layout and serves as a venue for performances and cultural events. In 2026, the San Secondo Di Pinerolo weekly market is scheduled for Tuesday afternoons; check the date before your trip.
