Roletto: Discover Church Art and Forest Trails
Accommodation in Roletto
If you’re looking for a hotel in Roletto, the area’s attractions offer practical inspiration for planning your trip: church art, walks close to nature and the Sentiero Bertrand each provide a different focus. This can help you decide whether to choose Roletto primarily for its religious buildings, the Bosco di Roletto or the nature trail through several parks.
Churches and Art in Roletto
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is the most historically and artistically significant building in Roletto. Its choir features vaulted frescoes dating to the 15th century. If you’re interested in religious art, the frescoes and their historical context offer a specific highlight.
The Cappella di San Lazzaro o dei Danesi also has distinctive architectural and artistic features. Its open narthex—a vestibule at the church entrance—has segmental-arch arcades on three sides. The chapel features a valuable late Gothic fresco of the Annunciation, which was restored in 2000.
The two buildings offer different highlights: the church’s choir frescoes take centre stage, while the chapel is notable for its open vestibule and Annunciation fresco. Depending on your interests, you can focus more on painting or architectural form. The dates refer to different things: the choir frescoes date to the 15th century, while the Annunciation fresco at the chapel was restored in 2000.
Bosco di Roletto and Sentiero Bertrand
The Bosco di Roletto was established in 1987 as an area for ecological compensation. Those involved in its creation included the Municipality of Roletto, local AIB volunteers, the WWF Pinerolo section, the Comunità Montana “Pinerolese Pedemontano” and private owners of neighbouring woodland. The history of the woodland is therefore shaped both by its ecological purpose and by cooperation among various local and private stakeholders.
Deer, wild boar, foxes, weasels, martens, squirrels, dormice and red mice can be found in the Bosco. The animals you encounter may vary by season. The woodland is ideal for relaxing walks in a natural setting, particularly for adults.
The Sentiero Bertrand begins in the Bosco di Roletto and passes through the parks of Monte Tre Denti and Monte San Giorgio. The trail is maintained by the local AIB, WWF and CAI associations. You can choose between two different ways to enjoy nature: relaxing walks in the woodland or a named route that passes through two parks.
Traditional Local Life
Roletto’s traditional carnival features allegorical floats and the local masked characters Marcu ’d Rolei and Marculina. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance.
