La Loggia: Nature and Architectural History
Accommodation in La Loggia
La Loggia offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: a protected area, municipal running routes, and buildings with a history of their own. There is also the Fiera d'Autunno, which takes place according to a schedule set for October. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in La Loggia, it helps to consider what matters most to you: would you like to focus your trip on landscapes and outdoor activities, are you interested in the history of churches and villas, or is a specific event date one of your criteria?
Nature and running routes
The Lanca di Santa Marta area (the confluence of the Po and Banna rivers) is an area of special conservation and a Special Protection Area. It covers 164 hectares and also includes the municipality of La Loggia. The running routes in La Loggia cover the entire municipal area and favor quiet, natural surroundings in the countryside. For planning your trip, these represent two different scales: the 164 hectares refer to the area of the protected site, while the routes cover the municipality as a whole. If outdoor exercise is important to you, the running routes therefore offer a distinct focus alongside the nature area.
Church, villa, and castle
The Church of San Giacomo Apostolo is a Baroque church with a single nave. Its chapels were painted by Nicola Arduino, and a fresco dating from the 18th century was rediscovered in the Chapel of Saint James. The building’s earlier history is also documented: the church stands on the ruins of an earlier chapel of the same name, which belonged to the Darmelli family. San Giacomo Apostolo thus brings together the history of the older chapel and the architecture of the later church. A single-nave church has one main nave.
Villa Carpeneto tells a different architectural story. The present-day villa is the result of two successive renovations of an original castle. The garden also changed over time: it was first laid out in the Italian style and later redesigned as an English garden. A few years ago, Villa Carpeneto was declared a national monument. Castello Galli offers a different point of interest and is considered probably the oldest building in La Loggia. The villa’s renovations and the change in garden style are its defining features; for Castello Galli, it is its probable age that stands out.
Fiera d'Autunno in October
A municipal regulation dated April 18, 2023, sets La Loggia’s Fiera d'Autunno for the second Sunday in October. If visiting the fair is a deciding factor for you, check the specific event date before your trip.
