Discover Armeno: Churches, Museum and Walking Loops
Accommodation in Armeno
Armeno brings together architectural and art history, a museum perspective on work in the hospitality industry, and walking loops with panoramic views. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta dates back to the 12th century; other religious sites focus on devotion and votive offerings. When planning your stay, cultural attractions and landscape experiences offer different options.
Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 12th century and was built over the remains of an ancient Roman temple. Its interior is Romanesque up to the altar and is divided into three naves; medieval capitals carved with animal figures add sculptural details. The church also houses the painting “Deposizione della Croce” by Fermo Stella da Caravaggio, dated 1548. The sequence of temple remains, Romanesque church interior, and painting reveals several historical layers at the parish church.
At the entrance to Armeno, the church is on Viale Cadorna, next to a car park. Check local conditions before travelling.
Sacred Sites in Sovazza and Luciago
The Chiesa di Santa Cecilia was founded in 1602. It is located in Sovazza, a hamlet of Armeno on a ridge above the Agogna River valley.
The Santuario di Luciago is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and became a local destination for religious devotion. Numerous votive offerings hang on the walls of its naves. The old chapel of the Santuario di Luciago once housed a fresco dated 1520. It depicts Christ on the cross, Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, and Saint John the Evangelist.
Museo degli Alberghieri
The Museo degli Alberghieri displays work tools, photographs, written records, menus, rare cookbooks, and old newspapers. The museum also documents that over the past four centuries, thousands of people from the Cusiana area left to work in kitchens, hotels, and restaurants around the world. The museum thus brings together practical tools and a history of professional emigration spanning more than four centuries.
