Salussola brings together archaeological traces, church and castle architecture, gold history and a varied landscape. This gives you a range of options when planning your trip: the town’s early history, evidence of its religious and architectural past, or the trails and nature of the surrounding area.

Churches, Archaeology and Townscape

Over the centuries, the San Secondo valley has yielded numerous archaeological finds from Roman and medieval times. The Pieve di San Secondo dei Vittimuli stands in the hamlet of San Secondo. Historians regard it as the mother church and oldest church in the lower Biellese; it dates back to the 4th century. Today, only the enclosing ruins remain of the original building. Here, a long-standing ecclesiastical significance meets a fragmentary architectural legacy.

Other buildings also point to different eras. You enter the village of Salussola through a well-preserved medieval town gate. The square tower of the old castle is a 20th-century reconstruction in the form of the original keep. Its identification as a reconstruction distinguishes it from the older elements of the townscape. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta stands beside Salussola’s panoramic viewpoint and dates from the 12th to the 15th century. Together, the gate, tower and church offer several specific points of reference for exploring the town’s architectural history.

Another ecclesiastical landmark is the Oratorio di San Nicola da Tolentino, which dates from the 16th century. Local religious tradition is also associated with a named trail: a document from 1695, kept in the Salussola parish archives, mentions the Sentiero delle Processioni Campestri. This historical reference links the trail to a specific source and a precise date.

Gold History and Craftsmanship

The Museum Laboratory of Gold and Stone is an institution of the Biellese Ecomuseum. In the Sala dell’Oro, the museum offers a historical tour through the world of gold. It covers the metal’s origins and history as well as its distribution, diverse uses and methods of processing. The subject therefore extends beyond extraction: the use and working of gold are also part of the overview.

The goldworking laboratory offers a different perspective. With the support of experts, it introduces visitors to key goldworking techniques, including chasing and repoussé. The tour in the Sala dell’Oro places gold in its historical context and explores its uses; the laboratory focuses on craft techniques. The two offerings therefore have different emphases. If you are interested in taking part in the laboratory, check the latest dates locally before your trip.

Landscape and Trails

The Elvo River crosses Salussola from northwest to southeast, dividing the municipal area in two. On the right bank of the Elvo, Salussola gradually climbs the hill at the end of the Serra and extends into dense woods and secluded intermorainic valleys. The landscape also includes a panoramic viewpoint with exceptional views of the Biellese. The river, hillside setting and viewpoint describe different aspects of the surrounding area.

The Valle dell’Oro has five restored hiking trails. Visitors can pick up a folder containing five trail sheets and a map in the museum’s Sala Sentieri. The hiking trails offer a distinct focus alongside the historic buildings and gold history. If you would like to use the materials for your planning, check that they are available before you arrive.

You can explore Salussola according to your own travel interests: archaeological finds, churches and buildings offer cultural and historical highlights; the Sala dell’Oro and goldworking laboratory focus on history and craftsmanship; and the Valle dell’Oro and the viewpoint turn your attention to trails and landscapes. Whichever of these subjects you choose to focus on, it provides a concrete starting point for planning your trip.
