Muzzano lies on the right bank of the Elvo. In the valley near Muzzano, a wooded narrow gorge with a small canyon comes into view. The rural landscape has been preserved over time through human effort; the farmsteads around Monte Cuchello express this character particularly clearly. The river, wooded gorge and agricultural surroundings provide a setting for a stay where nature, trails and local history come together.

Hiking Trails around Muzzano and Bagneri

An easy hike from Muzzano to Bagneri takes in nature, geology, history and local legends. Bagneri is a mountain hamlet within the municipality of Muzzano, at an altitude of about 900 metres. Access is via the SP511 between Muzzano and the Santuario di Graglia; the final ten minutes of both access routes must be completed on foot. Allow for this walking section when planning your trip, and check trail conditions before setting out.

The most frequently used route, C31, starts at the car park above Bagneri, at an altitude of about 970 metres. It follows a gravel road, open only to authorised users, to huts in the municipality of Muzzano at an altitude of over 1,250 metres. This access restriction is an important part of planning the hike. Another route leads from Oropa or San Carlo via the Tracciolino to the Salvine mountain pastures and ends about 100 metres above a church. Check trail conditions before setting out.

A short circular trail connects Muzzano and Graglia and loops around wooded Monte Cuchello. Along the way, it offers views of Biella, Mombarone and the Serra. Unlike the hike to Bagneri, which covers a broad range of themes, this loop focuses on circling Monte Cuchello and enjoying the views. The trails therefore differ not only in their destinations but also in the themes they explore along the way.

Churches, Exhibition and Ecomuseum

The Church of the Confraternita del Rosario was built between 1606 and 1619. The Madonna del Rosario is still carried in procession there on the first Sunday in October; check the date locally before your trip. A 17th-century fresco depicts the Santuario di Oropa and bears the date 1632. Together, the procession and fresco reflect religious customs and artistic traditions. The parish church of Sant’Eusebio is also part of the town’s history: it was rebuilt in the 17th century.

Opposite the Confraternita del Rosario, the exhibition “Antonio Bertola ingegnere militare” is housed in the town hall. It connects Antonio Bertola’s life and character with the local landscape and with historical and religious paths and routes. Bagneri, a hamlet of Muzzano, is also home to the Ecomuseo della Civiltà Montanara di Bagneri. Its facilities include an old carpentry workshop, the former schoolroom, a chestnut room and a hut for drying chestnuts. The different rooms and buildings give the ecomuseum a tangible connection to craftsmanship, schooling and the use of chestnuts.

The landscape also tells the story of how the surrounding area has been used. An irrigation canal supplied fields and gardens in Graglia and Muzzano and still partly serves this purpose today. In the 19th century, Bagneri and the nearby Salvine area are described as having a combined population of 300 to 400. Events organised by the community in Bagneri include an autumn chestnut festival; specific dates may vary.

Planning Your Trip to Muzzano

If you are looking for a hotel in Muzzano, you can start by deciding whether hiking trails, Bagneri, or the churches and exhibition will be the main focus of your stay. The trails differ in their themes and access information; the cultural sites add another perspective through history and religious tradition. This makes it easy to plan around the interests you would like to pursue while you are there.
