Albugnano: Churches, Hill Trails and Panoramic Views
Accommodation in Albugnano
Albugnano brings together churches with a long history, hiking trails through the hills, and a lookout point overlooking the Astigiano region. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these highlights can help you plan: consider whether you would most like to hike, explore architectural history, or experience the landscape.
Hiking trails through the hills
The Cammino delle Colline Sacre passes through the hills of Albugnano and takes in historic and religious sites, including the Abbazia di Vezzolano. The Cammino Romanico Albugnano–Aramengo has a different focus: it descends through woods, meadows, and vineyards. At the start of this trail, hikers can see the Romanesque church of San Pietro; parts of the masonry and the apse remain from its original structure.
The Cammino Romanico starts at the Albugnano cemetery, where there is a parking area and a picnic area. Check local conditions before setting out. To choose between the two trails, you can use their stated focuses as a guide: historic and religious sites on the Cammino delle Colline Sacre, and a downhill route through the landscape on the Cammino Romanico.
Churches and their history
The Canonica – Abbazia Santa Maria di Vezzolano was built between the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century and is an important example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Its cloister has well-preserved frescoes, including shades of intense blue. The first document to mention the Ecclesia di Santa Maria di Vezzolano dates from 1095.
The Chiesa di San Giacomo Maggiore was built around 1450. Its basilica-style layout has three naves, and the church stands at the highest point in Albugnano. The Chiesa di San Pietro di Fenestrella is considered the oldest church in the Albugnano area. It has a rectangular hall with a semicircular apse.
The church of San Pietro in Albugnano is also historically connected with the nearby Canonica di Santa Maria di Vezzolano. A document from the Bishop of Vercelli dated 1235 confirms that San Pietro was under the authority of the provost of the Canonica. Together with the church buildings and their different forms, this provides a distinct historical focus alongside the hiking trails.
Belvedere A. Motta and the hilly landscape
The Belvedere A. Motta lies at an elevation of about 550 metres above sea level and is the highest point in the municipality of Albugnano. From there, you can enjoy 360-degree panoramic views across the hills of the Astigiano region. The Belvedere includes the Parco della Rimembranza, with memorial stones and a central altar. The all-round view puts the landscape centre stage, adding a distinct perspective to the historical and religious themes of the trails and churches.
A regional wine connection
The Albugnano 549 project has an oenological and regional focus and aims to promote an area with a Denominazione that today covers 44 hectares. Its goal is to produce a wine made entirely from Nebbiolo, expressing the characteristics of this area, with its marl soils and greater elevation than other appellations.
Azienda Nebbia has been passed down from generation to generation and preserves a tradition based on dedicated work and the promotion of the area’s aromas and characteristics. These connections add another regional dimension alongside the architectural history, hiking trails, and views across the Astigiano region.
