Civitanova del Sannio offers two distinct travel-planning options: sacred architecture and monastic history, as well as hiking and cycling. If you are looking for a hotel, consider whether you would prefer to explore historical sites or set aside time for an excursion in the countryside.

Churches and Monastic History

The Monastero di San Benedetto was built around the year 1000 and housed monks for about 400 years. The earthquake of 1456 destroyed the monastery. Only the bell tower and the outline of what is believed to have been an early Christian church remain.

The Chiesa di San Silvestro dates back to the 11th century and was consecrated in 1569. Its architecture features Renaissance and Baroque elements. Another historical trace leads to the Cappella di San Rocco: it was built with donations from the local population in gratitude for surviving the plague of 1656. On August 31, 1973, it reopened for worship after the roof had been completely reconstructed and the furnishings renewed. This date refers to the reopening at that time, not to current opening hours.

Madonna del Carmelo also has its own building history: the church was built anew from the ground up and decorated with stucco on its walls and vaults. The statue of Madonna del Carmelo is a valuable work by Amalia Dupré of Florence. Another landmark is a monumental cross in a pedestrian area protected from traffic. Flower beds and two basins that form a fountain surround it.

Hikes with Different Trail Scenery

A CAI route description for an excursion on October 12, 2025, gives details of a circular hike of about 7 km in the S.I.C. Montagnola Molisana. Most of it passes through beech forests. The starting point is near the Civitanova del Sannio forestry refuge, at an altitude of 1,190 m.

The Sentiero Piergiorgio Frassati begins at the Fonte della Castagna bridge on the old connecting road between Civitanova and Sessano del Molise. The CAI description, published in 2023, follows the trail to Macchia Tonda at an altitude of 1,090 m. There, sparse vegetation and wide views across the valley define the landscape. Trail conditions and markings may change, so check current conditions before setting out.

Another trail leads near the Trigno River to the settlement of Santa Brigida, where the ruins of the Monastero di San Benedetto stand. Check local conditions before visiting.

Cycling

Cycling Route No. 1 runs from Civitanova via S. Andrea, Chiauci, and Pescolanciano, then returns to Civitanova via S. Andrea. It is 43 km long in total. This offers a different indication of time and distance from the approximately 7 km hike: for the cycling route, the entire circuit is specified, while the hike is also described as passing mostly through beech forests. Road conditions and signage may change; check conditions before setting off.

The municipality has a number of mountain bikes available for excursions in the countryside, including to Montagnola and other distinctive places in the municipal area. If you would like to use this option, ask in advance about current availability and conditions of use. This can help you distinguish between a described cycling route and an excursion on a municipal mountain bike when planning your trip.
